From my Epic Fantasy novel Demon’s Bargain. On an errand, Abber stumbles across a street magician in cosmopolitan Bivmiav.

“Who among you would learn the secrets of my trade? Someone daring enough to risk their sanity for a spark of fire?” called the mage, darting intense dark eyes through the crowd. A mane of long black hair stirred in the breeze. His dark complexion contrasted against the sulfur-yellow folds of an Azervode overcoat. His gaze locked with hers and he dazzled her with a mischievous smile. She found herself smiling back. “Ah, a beautiful volunteer who shows her willingness with a smile.” He quickly scooped up the coins, stuffing them into his belt pouch. “Keep that money handy, fool. You may have to buy her willingness like the rest of us,” heckled a bored Ferrruthan nobleman. Bowing to the teenaged fop, the juggling mage replied, “Some of us can pay with charm.” The mage stumbled and Abber held out a hand to catch him. As they touched, he stage-whispered, “Do you want to learn magic?” Abber stepped back, startled, and the men in the crowd laughed. “Fire is easiest when you have magic in your blood,” he said. “You have great potential inside you. I can see it in your lovely, generous eyes.” The fop chuckled at the fawning compliment. “Focus on releasing your magic.” The mage pulled scarves out of her bundle of cloth. Abber pulled away but his scarves tugged at the bundle. “Make yourself the eye of a storm, calmly controlling the energy pouring out from the ether.” The scarves ignited with a fountain of sputtering sparks. Abber frantically beat out any sparks that landed on the burlap. “Once you have done your first spell, the possibilities explode.” Abber took a breath to object, along the lines that magic was considered trafficking with demons and subject to arrest in her native land. Instead, the juggler tossed a handful of buzzing points of fire, startling Abber to escape. Fashionable lace flopped at the nobleman’s wrists as he clapped for the cruel finale.
