Circa 1961 Viceroy cigarettes comic strip newspaper ad. This strip features an Alaska adventure & the slogan, "You hear it from Alaska to Florida, a thinking man's choice, Viceroy filters." Which is more subtle about advertising to kids, this or Joe Camel? #alaskahistory #alaska

Insights into 1970s Alaska sex lives by cartoonist Bud Root, from the 1975 Alaska Pipeline Workers Handbook, an unofficial if high quality one-shot magazine that targeted newcomers to Alaska. Perhaps relevant, the editor and publisher were women. #alaskahistory #alaska

July 9, 1916, the funeral procession for the first known murder in the new town of Anchorage. On July 6, Russian immigrant Jim Kasoff killed Alex Takoff, a fellow Russian. It was quite possibly a case of mistaken identity. #alaskahistory #alaska #anchoragehistory

In 1960, Anchorage DA George Hayes said in court, "In Anchorage murder is not an uncommon thing...The value of life is not what it ought to be and what I hope it someday will be." I get annoyed at people who think crime is a recent import to Alaska. #alaskahistory #alaska

Aftermath of an August 24, 1976 shootout inside the Fairbanks police department. A man entered, started firing, and wounded 1 officer. Too many people think Alaska used to be safe, that crime is recent import. It wasn't new in pipeline era either. #alaska #alaskahistory

During his 1923 visit to Alaska, President Warren Harding was briefly allowed to play with a locomotive throttle, on the stretch between Wasilla and Willow. He was too heavy with the brake and broke many dishes. #alaskahistory #alaska

July 10, 1980, President Jimmy Carter fishing at Clarence Lake in Alaska. He spent about five hours there. He caught 24 grayling, most with flies of his own design. He released most of them, but 4 were pan-fried on the spot for breakfast. #alaskahistory #alaska
