“Self portrait in Green”, 2026, St. Louis, @ratkeydesigns.bsky.social. Vivian Maier was a nanny but also an amazing street photographer. Though mostly unknown as the majority of her work wasn’t discovered until 2007 at a Chicago thrift auction. A small collection of her street photos are self-portraits in reflective objects like slide 7 (https://www.vivianmaier.com/gallery/self-portraits/#slide-7 ). Which is what this entry is based on. I learned about Maier’s work while working on my BA in Graphic Design and realized that here was a photographer who’s street work was more than just snap shots but had a photojournalistlistict flare. Which in turn validated my continued efforts to capture the world around me even if it was mundane, from a new perspective. And to tell a story. Not to force one into my compositions, but capture a small slice of frozen time. To share if just for a moment how I see the world, for that’s all photography is.

Photo is of an installation I created (called 'Kitchen Nightmare') for a promenade theatre production 'Learning the Rules of Chinese Whispers'. It was a giant lampshade made from barbed wire and kitchen utensils which cast amazing shadows around the room, heavily influenced by Cornelia Parker's 'Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View'. (I think this is probably cheating as it's very much #DeliberateArtist rather than #AccidentalArtist.) By Jan Davies (DM @hangerupper.bsky.social) St Andrews 2004Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View Cornelia Parker 1991 A garden shed, and its various miscellaneous contents, were blown to smithereens by the army. The pieces of the shed and its contents were then suspended using transparent wire, as if in mid explosion, and were lit by a single light bulb at the centre, casting dramatic shadows around the room.
