Week #41 of 52Frames: Curves!

“Where Darkness Bends”.

#52frames #52frames_curves #photography #blackandwhite #monochrome #minimalism #quebec #canada #abstract #eastcoastkin

A minimalist black-and-white photograph transforms a monumental circular sculpture into an abstract interplay of sweeping curves, luminous surfaces, and deep shadows. Photographed from below, the sculpture stands near the Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Visitation in Québec City, although its surroundings and recognizable form have almost entirely disappeared from view. A broad, pale surface rises gracefully from the left edge of the frame, reaching a gentle crest near the upper centre before descending in a smooth, almost vertical arc toward the bottom right. Sunlight washes across its subtly textured surface, revealing delicate variations of silver, pearl grey, and soft white that suggest both the solidity of metal and the fluidity of fabric caught in motion. Beneath this luminous sweep, a second curve emerges from darkness. A deep black opening rises from the lower left, its rounded boundary following the sculpture's inner contour before giving way to a quiet expanse of muted grey sky. Along the upper right, the sculpture's shadowed reverse forms a dark diagonal plane, subtly revealing the three-dimensional structure concealed within the abstraction. The composition is stripped of nearly all context, leaving light and darkness to define one another through opposing curves. The strong tonal contrast evokes chiaroscuro, while the absence of recognizable scale gives the sculpture an almost impossible sense of weightlessness. What remains is a quiet visual paradox: something massive appears to flow, something motionless suggests movement, and the darkness surrounding the illuminated form seems to acquire a shape of its own. A study in geometry, negative space, and the delicate boundary where light ends and darkness begins.

I've started participating in 52Frames, a weekly photography challenge. This week's challenge is curves. I chose a picture for it--the album will go live on Tuesday--but I took so many pictures, so thought, maybe share some here? #52frames, #52frames_curves #photography

The Fifth Street School courtyard taken from the entrance, showing two arches. An outside hallway at the Fifth Street School, an arch framed by a tree. A Corinthian column and amber lantern at the Fifth Street School. Purple flowers in the foreground and an arched hallway of the Fifth Street School in the background.

Week #40 of 52Frames: Shoot With A Phone!

“Half Awake”.

#52frames #52frames_shootwithaphone #photography #blackandwhite #monochrome #minimalism #quebec #canada #eastcoastkin #dog

A black-and-white close portrait of a white boxer dog resting low on the floor in a strong shaft of sunlight. The dog's broad head fills much of the left and center of the frame, its chin pressed into a soft blanket and its eyes only partly open, giving an expression of deep relaxation and drowsy awareness. Bright sunlight strikes the forehead, muzzle, back, and extended front paw, creating luminous whites against the surrounding darkness. The dog's textured black nose forms a strong central anchor, while fine details in the short fur and whiskers remain visible across the face. One side of the body recedes into deep shadow, and the outstretched leg leads diagonally toward the lower right corner. Behind the dog, the interior falls into near-black, while a vertical wooden surface at the right catches the same hard light. The wide composition emphasizes the dog's stretched posture and quiet physical presence. The high contrast gives an ordinary domestic moment a sculptural, almost theatrical quality, balancing intimacy, stillness, and the simple pleasure of resting in warm light.

"My muse"
I often stop by this lovely spot on my daily commute. For a recent Golden Hour photo challenge, I got up early to catch the sunrise in all its glory.

Photo showing a church and surroundings in silhouette against the sunrise. The sun rises over a low mountain range in the distance, separated from the viewer by a large body of water. The sky is partly cloudy, slightly veiling the sun and diffusing its golden light. Watermark identifying photographer as Geneviève Laurin.

Week #39 of 52Frames: Golden Hour!

“Present, Unseen."

Extreme elongation of shadows are only possible at golden hour...

#52frames #52frames_goldenhour #photography #color #abstract #minimalism #quebec #canada #eastcoastkin

A long human shadow stretches almost the full height of the vertical frame across a lawn illuminated by warm morning golden-hour light. The photographer remains outside the image, visible only through the dark silhouette cast forward by the low sun. The shadow begins beyond the bottom edge and narrows upward toward a clearly defined head and shoulders positioned within the brightest area of grass near the top of the frame. Its exaggerated length transforms an ordinary standing figure into an almost monumental presence. The surrounding grass glows in yellows, ochres, and muted greens, with scattered autumn leaves adding small touches of orange and brown. Cooler, darker areas within the shadows contrast strongly with the sunlit ground. A broad diagonal shadow enters from the upper left, adding another geometric layer without overtaking the central figure. The composition is simple but slightly uncanny: no person is actually visible, yet the photographer’s presence dominates nearly the entire image. The low morning light becomes both subject and means of representation, turning absence into a temporary self-portrait made entirely from light and shadow.

Aw shoot! I am only periodically posting for #52frames this year but this week's theme perfectly lined up with our trip to #musiccity. Welp I forgot to upload my photo in time. 😔Here's several candidates (the first one would've been my pick). #photography #livemusic #nashville

A medium shot of male musician performing on stage. He is wearing a wide-brimmed black hat, a dark grey sleeveless t-shirt with a camouflage pattern, and blue jeans. He has visible tattoos on both arms. The man is singing passionately into a microphone stand while playing an acoustic guitar with brown wood. He has a focused, intense expression. In the blurred background to his left, another person is partially visible also performing. The setting is a rustic indoor music venue with wooden walls and sound equipment nearby.A vibrant, dimly lit photograph capturing a live country music performance inside the Whiskey Bent Saloon in Nashville, Tennessee. On stage, three musicians are performing for an audience. The centerpiece is a male vocalist/guitarist wearing a cowboy hat and dark clothing, passionately playing an acoustic guitar. To his right, another band member is visible holding a brown-toned electric guitar. Behind them, the red and black logo of the "WHISKEY BENT SALOON" is clearly visible on the stage backdrop. In the foreground, the back of a person's head and shoulders is visible, representing the perspective of someone watching the show. The overall atmosphere is energetic and rustic, emphasized by the dramatic stage lighting that casts deep shadows and highlights the performers.A musician is seen reflected in a mirror hanging over a bar. The musician is wearing a white cowboy hat, and black short sleeve shirt. He's singing into a microphone and strumming a dark wooden acoustic guitar. The walls of the bar are wood paneled and a number of alcohol bottles sit below the mirror. In the foreground are several audience members looking in the direction of the stage which is not included in the picture except what is visible in the mirror.A large, dense collection of tributes, primarily flowers and memorial items, surrounds a black inlaid plaque on gray concrete pavement. The scene is dominated by vibrant colors—bright pink, neon yellow, crimson red, and pastels—mixed with the duller greens of wilted foliage. The plaque is dark gray/black and features white text, identifying "DOLLY PARTON" and commemorating the location as a "MUSIC CITY WALK OF FAME," dated November 8, 2009. Surrounding this central marker is a chaotic mound of offerings: various bouquets, loose stems, torn paper items (including bright yellow and pink plastic/paper), large bunches of wilted flowers, ribbons, and assorted memorabilia. The tributes appear aged; many flowers are wilted or dried out, suggesting the items have been left outside for some time. A prominent bright pink plastic bag rests near the bottom left of the composition.

Week #38 of 52Frames: Music!

“The Solitude of Listening”.

#52frames #52frames_music #photography #color #blue #music #quebec #canada #eastcoastkin

A close, blue-toned photograph of large black over-ear headphones resting beside a tablet filled with music apps. Spotify, SoundCloud, Amazon Music, Deezer, BandLab and other services appear across the glowing screen, offering a sense of almost limitless musical choice. On the right, luminous blue notes and sweeping staff lines seem to flow through the display like music made visible. The shallow depth of field softens the tablet dock, concentrating attention on the headphones and the scattered applications. The headphones dominate the foreground, creating a dark, enclosing presence beside the bright digital abundance. The contrast suggests a distinctly modern way of experiencing music: countless songs, artists and platforms available instantly, yet heard privately through a device intended for a single listener. Rather than depicting performance or communal listening, the photograph reflects on how music has moved from speakers filling a shared room toward an increasingly personal, isolated experience.

Week #37 of 52Frames: Black And White!

“What Endures, What Blooms”.

#52frames #52frames_blackandwhite #photography #blackandwhite #monochrome #minimalism #abstract #quebec #canada #eastcoastkin

Viewed from below, the dark stone fortifications of Québec’s Citadelle rise diagonally across the lower half of the image, their irregular blocks rendered in deep shades of black and charcoal. Above the massive wall, a narrow strip of carefully maintained grass forms a small meadow along the roofline. Delicate wildflowers and slender stems emerge from it, their silhouettes and tiny seed heads illuminated from behind by the sun. Against the vast, pale and almost empty sky, these fragile forms appear as scattered points of light. The extreme contrast between the heavy masonry and the ephemeral vegetation creates a quiet meditation on time, permanence, and renewal. The fortification evokes four centuries of human history, endurance, and weight, while the flowers suggest the brief and recurring presence of life. The diagonal composition reinforces the tension between these two forces, separating the darkness of the stone from the openness of the sky. In black and white, color disappears and the image becomes primarily about light, texture, shape, and scale. What initially appears to be an austere architectural study gradually reveals itself as a contemplation of what survives and what exists only for a moment.

Week #36 of 52Frames: Reflection!

“The Lens’s Eye”.

#52frames #52frames_reflection #photography #blackandwhite #monochrome #minimalism #abstract #quebec #canada #eastcoastkin

A black-and-white close-up of a curved macro lens front element, positioned in front of a window frame. The image is dominated by a heavy, dark silhouette of the lens barrel, framing a central, brightly illuminated area of reflected light. The curvature of the lens distorts the view of the outside world—sky and trees—stretching them into sweeping, abstracted arcs that mimic the shape of an eye. The brightest spot of reflected light sits near the center of this curve, resembling a catchlight or pupil, while the surrounding glass surface retains a soft, grainy texture. A vertical window frame divides the composition, reinforcing the sense of a barrier. The image creates a fleeting, unsettling impression of a human face, as if the lens itself is a person looking out, blurring the line between tool and subject, machine and organism. The mood is isolated and contemplative, inviting the viewer to consider the nature of vision and the instruments that capture it.
