The line only works if you accept a definition it never states. Duty, in ordinary use, just means something you are responsible for, and people want to do what they're responsible for all the time. The nurse who loves nursing, the parent who wanted the child. Nothing suffers in either case. But the speaker here means duty in the older, narrower sense: an obligation handed to you from outside, which you'd be shirking the moment you consulted your own wishes. Kant pushed that version to its limit, arguing an act counts as moral only when you do it against your inclination, so wanting to do the right thing actually costs you the credit. Both meanings are in circulation, and this sentence quietly trades the first for the second without telling you.

Inside the book it isn't a general claim at all, and that's the part a meme can't carry. It's advice given to a character whose situation genuinely admits no third option. There is no arrangement in which both are served. For him the sentence isn't philosophy, it's an accurate description of a trap, and the novel spends its length watching him fail to escape it.

Adeyemi's publisher treats it exactly that way. The official reading-group guide prints this passage and asks readers to test it: how does the statement reflect each main character's journey, and what role do duty and heart play in their decisions? That is a question about a claim made inside a story, not an endorsement of it. The book gives the line to a character, and then gives four characters whose choices either confirm or complicate it. Whether it holds is the assign
