Mount Rainier’s broad, snow-covered summit rises into a deep blue sky above a jagged line of gray rock. A thick bank of white cloud fills the valley below, curling around the ridges and partially hiding the forested slopes. Tall, dark evergreens frame the view, their pointed tops reaching into the bright band of mist. Sunlight on the mountain’s glaciers makes the peak stand out against the shadowy forest below.

A deep blue evening sky with billowing fair-weather clouds. The evening sun is directly behind us, casting long shadows towards the base of towering reddish brown cliffs straight ahead. It is also painting those cliffs with a rich golden light. The cliffs are almost bare rock, with a few scraggly trees scattered around, leafless hardwoods with a few pines mixed in. A fringe of red cedars and more leafless hardwoods run along the top and down both sides of the cliffs.
