The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'mental' - this is a good snapshot for one of my MC's personalities and why she desperately feels the need to rebel before her high school days run dry.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'mental' - the following is an excerpt from my WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - It wasn’t a lie. Mom’s policy was easy enough to follow: don’t come home intoxicated, pregnant, or arrested. Pretty much everything else was permitted. Perhaps that’s why she resented me. She’d opened the doors to my stable and I comfortably remained inside the boundaries of my cage. I was domesticated and unrebellious. Just the talk of sneaking out late was scandalous for me, and what a shame that was. Sixteen and I was already a chaste, docile person, mental experimentation notwithstanding. Then again, mom’s head would have exploded if I told her I was crossing train tracks over a live road. It was hard to tell what was truly off limits until I offended her part time parental senses.

Another 2-fer today

Isn't it strange how certain words group together?

'𝙎𝙝𝙪𝙩 𝙪𝙥. 𝙌𝙪𝙞𝙩 𝙨𝙖𝙮𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩. 𝙄 𝙖𝙢 𝙉𝙊𝙏 𝙜𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡...'
"𝙸 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚔... 𝚊𝚝 𝚕𝚎𝚊𝚜𝚝 𝚗𝚘𝚝 𝚢𝚎𝚝."

Enjoy today's #wipsnip brought to you by the ıusɐuıʇʎ within us all!

This shows an screenshot from a word processor. The text reads:
The mental chains trembled.
The Keiyaku’s cold energy pulsed against them, washing away the sound, filling him with the will to act.
Because he had more to give—much more—to Fuku. His partner was in trouble, dying… and what was Ben doing? Wallowing in self-pity. Letting his past chain him down. Allowing fear and anxiety to win over love.
He was a gods-damned fool.
Ben blinked the tears from his eyes. His vision cleared, fixing on Kitkinista looming above him, pincers raised high, ready to strike.
“WAIT!” he roared, forcing himself to his feet.
The announcer’s voice boomed across the arena. A reminder of the urgency of Fuku’s plight.
And then, the mental voice again: ‘Has the fool seen the error of his ways?’

#WIPSnip 2 Sept: "button"

The button-click was just so satisfying, as was the way the light slowly extinguished--like it was an inhale of lumens and a slow exhale, rather than the automated immediacy of the wrath of a thousand sun gods.

@vhkingsink.bsky.socialSep 7, 2026, 7:19 PM

#WIPSnip 3 Sept: "effective"

Barrells had been set out--and if that didn't work, three more government vehicles made an effective roadblock. Fire chief. State troopers. Another symbol Turner couldn't place until Judith was halfway up the exit ramp. Department of Defense.

#WIPSnip 4 Sept: "collapse"

(using fall/falling since i don't have collapse)

The light from the room would keep her from falling. Her eyes had adjusted well enough to the shadows, but showering in the absolute dark was probably a bad idea.

I'm in England, so I've gone with "lift".

Tilda is taken to meet someone who may remember the events of 1963.
#WriteSky #WIPSnip #WritingCommunity

“When did you move to Cappelle-la-Grande?” asked Tilda.
“When I was eleven. I needed to get to a high school, and although there was a bus that drove around the villages, picking up students, it took forever, and it meant I could never do after-school activities, or go to a classmate’s home. Besides, Mum reckoned by then that she could go out to work properly, that I’d be all right coming home to an empty house. She was never back more than an hour after me.” He pointed to the junction ahead. “We turn left there, and the home’s only a couple of minutes away.”
As she got out of the car, Tilda looked around her. She could smell the sea, but not see it. The smell suggested a beach, rather than a dock, so perhaps there were nice coastal walks nearby. There was a good-sized car park separating the home itself from the road. The building was long and tall; she supposed that there must be lifts for the upper floors. She followed her companion through the main entrance, and he led her straight through the reception area to a large airy sitting room.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'elevator' - the only use of this word in my WIP is a moment of dire terror as my MC grapples with the fact that someone she loves was intentionally disappeared right under her nose. CW for extreme emotional distress.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

The WIP Snip Word of the Day is 'elevator' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary with the word of the day - Mild content warning for extreme emotional distress - Hands shaking as I picked up Carrie's old corded phone, my heart dropped into my stomach like an elevator loosed from its cables. The phone's cord was cut. My grip on the receiver slipped, my mind tilting and turning to water underneath my body as I dropped it to the floor. Breath trembling with horror, I backed up and clattered into the kitchen table. The sound started me and I let out a scream. Tears began running wild down my cheeks as I stormed back through the house, praying this was all some sick fucking prank for making her look stupid in front of her boyfriend.

#WIPSnip for Sept. 6th: Sigh

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #amwriting #fantasy

Maren giggled, the sound half-swallowed by a sudden gust of wind. ‘I get it. Master Lesedi loves these guarding missions, but every time we take one I wish I was doing almost anything else.’ She sighed. ‘Then again, I just graduated the Académie, I probably shouldn’t expect anything too challenging for a while.’

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'sigh' and oh boy do I use this one a lot. Someone book my MC an all expenses paid resort vacay, stat! It's hard being a social outcast when there's a mystery afoot. What ally has the pariah?
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

The WIP Snip Word of the Day is 'sigh' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - Face falling, a final drained sigh escaped me. It felt like a practice run for my last breath. Months had gone by and I had absolutely no one to talk to about anything. Nia's comfort and Lucas's bravery was as close to solidarity as I had. Outside of those blips in the dark, I was stumbling through a nightmarish hell alone. Writing it down did nothing. What I really wanted to do was break everything. I wanted to take a metal bat to the TV every time they recirculated the missing persons' special, shorter each time than the last. I wanted to break the mirrors and headlights off of Logan's shitty little car. I just wanted somewhere to put my pain.

#WIPSnip for Sept. 5th: 'Panel'

Candlelight reflected off the crystal and china of the elaborately set table. The walls were paneled in wood, and rich curtains covered the windows. The table could seat a dozen, instead of the five people currently dining. Footmen hovered, ready as soon as the second course was finished.

The #WIPSnip Word of the Day is 'effective' - I honestly wasn't sure I had this word in my rough draft, but I got the luck of the draw here.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

The WIP Snip word of the day is 'effective' - the following is an excerpt from my novel WIP Canary featuring the word of the day - Leaning back in my seat in AP environmental science, I thought about how I'd fill my time. Typically, I'd hang out with Bekah and write with her until the sun went down. Then, when I got home, we'd keep texting each other until one of us finally conceded to our exhaustion. Until I had befriended Bekah, I would have wasted the hours away binge watching a television series. I'd have been sat on the couch and forced to counsel my mother through basic conflicts in the workplace and reminder her that, despite what she believed, job hopping was not effective for a woman her age.
