The ending of Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach. Simply for the MC James finding a better, happy found family with his insect companions, and escaping his abusive, horrible aunts.

I'm not a big VN player, but for whatever reason "I Wani Hug That Gator" caught my interest. 😅 And while it has multiple endings by nature of being an VN, the True Ending really did feel earned and deserved when you looked back at all the choices leading up to it, >>>

Whimsical Writers (Sept. 19th)!

Shout out to my good friend @zandrawsthings.bsky.social, who gave me this prompt. You can talk about an ending you've written but it's important to talk about stories which have inspired us too.

While endings are often melancholy affairs, some are celebrations. A good example of a "happily ever after" is The Tempest by Shakespeare. Tell us about a whimsical ending you love.

This was written from only the letters in the title topic, "The Apple Orchard". I decided to rhyme this one. Give Odle a try sometime, such a satisfying quick challenge! www.odle.app #writingcommunity #wordgames #blueskypoetry #micropoetry #WhimsicalWriters

I'm pretty much an introvert, but I enjoy my Greek traditions

Especially New Year's tradition of finding a coin baked in a Vasilopita cake-- who finds the coin in their piece will be blessed with good fortune for a year

I've been a cave troll my whole life. I stay in my home and do my thing. I didn't even attend my own graduations. Closest /I/ have is getting 'kidnapped' by my highschool friends to go hang out, play games, and listen to music. Sometimes lasertag XD They were nice experiences.

In particular, I loved blending the tradition of blessing the jesters of Fastnacht with the fertility whips of Lupercalia as part of one clan's celebration. It's not in my WIP yet, but it's coming!

What a lovely q!

When I was building out the immortals' calendar, I grabbed details from both Fastnacht (basically Swabian Mardi Gras) & Lupercalia to create the varying traditions for Midnight's Ball between all of the immortal clans.

To signal that one of my characters is "Chinese" (in a fantasy setting), she comments on Clara's red bridal gown being a lucky color, and mentions wanting to wear a qipao for herself.

Traditional Chinese wedding dresses are red, while white is linked to mourning but nowadays-

#WhimsicalWriters I don't think I've ever really paid attention to local traditions, but if I had to pick a tradition that I love, it'd be Halloween.

The world is scary. There's something whimsical about being able to put on makeup or a mask to scare the world back.

One tradition from Wales that I absolutely adore is the Mari Lwyd. It's essentially a mid-winter game where those dressed as the Mari Lwyd ask to be let in while those in the house have to refuse, all through song.

It's pretty fun.

An excerpt from Of Dina & Dan (Raven & Bear: 5) by Bramble, in black text on a white background. It features the Mari Lwyd, singing to request entry.

Transcript:
The corridor was dimly lit by candles which hovered about a figure draped in moonlight. A shadow filled those pale robes, decorated with blood-red ribbons. From beneath a hood adorned by wilted flowers and silent bells, its hideous visage emerged. This horse skull turned slowly as a hollow eye regarded each of them, until that lifeless glower finally fell upon Ata. Then their visitor’s jaw fell open in a merry melody.

“Mari Lwyd has come,
to pay her friends a visit.
For winter’s dreary nights
Demand our hearths be lit.

Kindling spent, she’s cold,
In need of bread and beer.
So bring in Mari Lwyd,
To share in lively cheer.

Hasten friends so kind,
Respond to Mari’s plea.
A pact of true import,
Is hospitality.”

The Wolf Knight features a reference to The Dream of Rhonabwy. In which, Arthur plays chess while lamenting the state of Wales under Norman rule. Here the girls discuss leadership as fellow princesses.

An excerpt from The Wolf Knight (Raven & Bear: 9) by Bramble, in black text on a white background. Princesses Ata and Ceindrych discuss the qualities of leadership they aspire to.

Transcript:
“B. to f-six,” Princess Ceindrych interjected with a small smirk when it captured a knight, “many think you may become a worthy steward of the land and a great leader for its people.”

“Where did you hear that?” Bright eyes wrinkled in confusion at that sacrifice, before Ata asked, “are you certain of that?”

“Your grace, you’re coddling,” this young knight tapped his staff against her boot in a gentle reminder, “let her play.”

“It’s alright, I’m used to being helped,” she traded a queen and bishop for the same plus a rook. Frail fingers fidgeted with a loose strand of hair, wrapped around them in pale rings. Then Princess Ceindrych spoke furtively, “Bishop Bainescroft and my loyal wolf speak highly of you, as they could never speak of me.”

“Why not?” Ata’s head tilted to one side, “you’re amazing.”

“That’s kind,” a cloudy stare glanced up from that board in search of brighter eyes, “but I can’t spot a candle in the dark.”

This older girl stepped around the table between them and took a knee. Wordlessly, those dainty hands were clasped in her own which felt rough by comparison. A dusk-lit glower warmed that child’s cheeks before a calloused palm pressed against one with a stern tenderness. Both smiled earnestly as Ata promised the princess she was already a leader and capable of greatness.

“People don’t follow a god they can’t see, they follow you.”

Whimsical Writers (Sept 17th)!

Many of us will have written about festivals or holidays in our stories. Today let's take a look at our own communities and cultures. Have you used any local traditions as an inspiration for your writing?

Shit😅

I literally added this last night after remembering I was allowed to add whimsical character moments and details in their debut story, so here are my investigators on digital stake-out taking a moment to be human…

“Hm? Oh, I’m sure you’ll tell me if you find anything…” she sighed breezily. Did she expect him to sort through hours of footage on his own? What did she plan to do? She caught his look and paused, then one of her smirks crept onto her face and she winked.
“I’ll take first watch. Friday night. You take Saturday and we’ll split last night down the middle.”
It was a fair compromise and soon they were sitting quietly in their respective corners, both glaring fixedly at their screens as the previous weekend played out at triple-speed before their eyes. After a moment, Charlie dug in her bag and produced a single serving tin of spaghetti.
“I’m starving. Do you mind if I lunch?”
“Help yourself,” he shrugged.
The sound of the tin cracking open slashed noisily through the quiet office. It was her first day at a new job, Jack reasoned. Convenience was probably her priority today. Besides, he had no right to judge. But as he was quietly justifying her nutritional choices, something else occurred to him.
“Do… Did you need me to show you where the microwave is?”
“Hm? Mh-mh,” she shook her head and swallowed down her mouthful. “It’s cooked before they put it in the tin,” she explained. He watched her, hunkered over her food, curled on her new chair in the corner like a goblin.
“But it’s cold,” he pointed out, mystified in spite of himself. She shrugged sheepishly and continued eating, half done already. The tiniest shiver of revulsion ran down his spine and he returned to his screen.
“So you’re a priest, then?” She asked a few minutes later, after setting aside the empty tin.
“Hm? Yes,” Jack answered, slowing the footage down to try to track the shadows of headlights across the windows on unit sixteen. What had Ms. Taylor seen? He didn’t

They're talking about club names, but the name itself is pretty whimsical~ Kinda XD

Like they didn’t do that already. Still, his enthusiasm was bright enough to capture her in its radiance. “What kind of club is it?”

Sardon smirked, a twinkle forming in his eye. Which could only mean he was about to spout out the worst idea ever.

“It’s a science club, and—get this. I call it the Future Heroes of Upir Club, or FHUC!”

He nodded proudly, like he’d come up with the best name for it. Cathy couldn’t help but feel sorry for the members he’d already recruited.

“If it’s science, then why ‘Future Heroes’?” she asked tentatively.

My MCs have a few silly discussions during their childhood. Here is Clara enlightening Wesley (the werewolf) on things he should not eat.

Writing excerpt:

“Bad for wolf, makes sense. But why is chocolate so scary?”

She slapped her hands on her legs. “I told you! It’ll make you sick!”

“It smells good.”

“Please don’t try it. You’ll feel really bad, and then I’ll laugh at you.”

“No you won’t. You’re nice.” He had a point. Carefully adjusting his skirt, he sat on the grass. “Don’t worry. I only eat when I dream.”

#WhimsicalWriters these are both WIPs right now-

Aloe - bonding (during an actual war in which they are refugees) and Acanthus talks about the time they were a pirate.

Such Sweet Sorrow - Rebecca and Elena are two women alone in a creepy-ass house. I don't have much whimsy in this one.

A snippet from Aloe in Acanthus' POV. It says:

"Acanthus, tell us a story about when you were a pirate," Lykaia demanded. Eyes flew to me. Suddenly I wanted nothing more than to be invisible. My cheeks flushed.

"Come to think of it, when we were at The Yellow Rose, that other Vampire, Corbin, mentioned you were a pirate too," Ebony recollected. The intrigue grew on everyone's faces, As close as I got to everyone, I was still growing accustomed to others being interested in me or my past. I shifted my gaze to Abyss, who gave me a knowing grin. Pausing, I instinctively went to tuck my hair behind my ear, only to tuck air with it being done up. My fingers played with the hem of the cloak instead.

"Aw, come on, Acanthus," Lykaia whined.

Suddenly, the booming voice of our opera singer belted out, "Fifteen men on a dead man's chest, yo-ho, yo-ho!" It was both beautiful and dreadfully embarrassing. Soon there was a chorus of voices singing along in different pitches, keys, and tones. I couldn't help but grin.

Chaos. I had inspired chaos.A snippet of Such Sweet Sorrow by Artemis Quinn. It says:

"Okay. Top shelf, yours. Second shelf, mine," she stated, matter-of-fact.

I went to reply, but cut short at the sound of someone talking. My eyes flew to Elena's, and she stared back, shoulders tense with caution. She mouthed, 'Who the fuck?' before she turned towards the kitchen. Seconds felt like hours as they passed, listening intently to the words.

"... Thirteen hours before the phone call was..."

I burst out laughing, shoulders sagging in relief. "Oh my god! It's my podcast!"

Elena furrowed her brow. "What?"

"I was listening to a podcast when you rang the doorbell, and I paused it. Something must have woken up my computer, and it started the auto-play. Listen..."
