a stone staircase spirals up towards us: at the bottom, a figure in a tunic and phrygian cap looks about as he approaches the first steps; a short way up, the figure is sprawled on the steps, his head cleanly sliced off; further up, his hand is vanishing into green sludge which fills a pit that has opened in the steps; a few steps higher, he is pinned in place by a vertical row of spears jutting from holes in the wall; up a few more steps, he has been crushed by a block of stone cut to fill the width of the stairs; almost at the top, only a pair of smoking shoes remain by the metal grille in the floor through which the glow of fire can be seen; at the top, having reached the landing, the figure looks down at his foot as the floor tile he's stepped on has just depressed with a 'click!'
