There is the famous ending of the movie, 2001, just mentioned, of the bright fetus within a silvery sphere floating in the perfect peace of space. Bowman, the astronaut, is alone in space at the end of a long journey that gradually got out of control, helped along by a computer, called Hal, which had gone rogue and become sinister. That plot development represents humans at the finale of our trajectory of technological progress, having gone as far as we can with machines alone. However, where death should come, instead Bowman transforms into a giant fetus, surrounded by a transparent orb of light, looking like a new-born star. It is a fetus appearing as the contented and aware one of a BPM I state — wide-eyed, receptive, and glowing ... and obviously at peace with its state in the Universe ... with unknown yet magnificent new beingness before him. Along the lines of us having greater awareness during our fetal state, there was a very interesting episode of the Moonlighting series in the late Eighties which — coincidentally employing an article and book title of mine, “A Womb With a View” — showed Bruce Willis in a womb-like enclosure as a fetus viewing, with the help of a higher spiritual ally, the upcoming events of his life.

Freud showed how all human lives are drawn out against the background of each person’s inner struggle between the opposing forces of life and death ... Eros and Thanatos. Freud advanced an understanding that made his insights revolutionary, specifically, that each of us carry within us a Will to Die. “Sometimes the Lights Are Shining on Me.” Freud observed that we act out a will to live and to be in the sun and to have fun and to love and to like goodness and health and truth. That’s Eros. We share it with all of Nature. “Other Times I Can Barely See.” Freud also saw that we have at other times an opposite drive or instinct that we wish to die. While I initially constructed and wrote down my devolutional theory of consciousness — Falls from Grace — without the benefit of Shoham’s work, upon discovering it I could not help but be both confirmed and reinspired by the astounding resonance his understanding has with my own. Shoham (1979, 1990) starts his devolutional model in the womb and carries it through birth, weaning, and the oedipal periods of development. Though, as I delineate in Part 2, I disagree with his model by beginning mine at the creation of sperm and egg — as do other devolutional theorists like Francis Mott and David Wasdell — in virtually all other major instances his model corresponds to my own if one simply ... in keeping with a normal trend in child development in general as it begins to integrate the new pre- and perinatal evidence ... places everything back a little farther in time — in this case, specifically, one stage back. So we find that the Reality of It All or the All That Is gets reduced down from what it is to the snippet of it that we have found to be biologically useful. But if we wish to know not merely what is practical but what is actually True or Reality, we need to go way beyond the smattering of facts thrown up by our ordinary senses and the sciences that are extensions of them. There are levels of that diminution of Reality — from All That Is down through what the individual knows to be true. So to know what is True, we need to reverse those reductions in true understanding.

Existential fact is in quotes to point out that this is not an essential fact of existence; rather they seem to be facts to humans because of the experience we share of being in constricting wombs which become uncomfortable and suffocating increasingly near the end. This is an example of what I have termed elsewhere, biologically constituted realities. Of course a similar thing — forcible “re-education” — could be said for the use of jail cells, solitary confinement, and enclosures like “The Hole” during incarceration. Simply the fact that we have a much greater percentage of our population in prisons than any time previously points to our mania of trying to control this aspect of our feelings from our origins ... and of an emerging perinatal unconscious triggering the reaction. While he himself experienced and believed in the validity of certain transpersonal phenomena — he believed in contact with the dead and it is said he had a moving experience interacting with his late father at a séance — and he had a post at the International Institute for Psychical Research, in several of his works he showed how some paranormal phenomena were rooted in psychological issues and were outward projections of them. He said ghosts were repressed components of the personality and that poltergeists were bundles of projected psychic energy from early trauma. Hence, they were not real as being paranormal ... or “spiritual”/transpersonal. His conclusion that some spiritual experiences are valid, but that others are rooted in traumas and are merely psychological is exactly the position I came to, independently. At any rate, his controversial stand, which had him discrediting certain phenomena that his paranormal associates favored, got him in trouble in their associations and related publications, and he was dismissed from the Institute for Psychical Research and slandered in one of the newspapers put out by his associates. This world consisting only of light and sunshine is an impossibility, however. So solar theologies require of their adherents a delusional life in which they are constantly forced to rearrange the meanings of the reality they experience to fit into a preconceived system of belief, which is a fantasy that seeks the denial of the suffering and darkness of life. By contrast, lunar theologies have a fuller understanding that darkness is not overcome by ignoring it or seeking to murder it without looking at it (Perseus). Rather evil and suffering are resolved only by looking deeply into them, “embracing” them, seeking to understand them, and transforming them. Thus the light (the moon) is discovered in the midst of darkness (the night) in the same way that there is a seed of light in the midst of darkness in the Tao symbol. Why We Can’t Get No Satisfaction Let us now add another factor to this development of supposed intelligence and culture. As I have been saying, altricial means humans are born helpless. We would die if not cared for. Secondary altriciality of humans, and only humans, means our brains and consequent functioning are even less advanced than other species at birth. We are, in essence, born premature relative to other species. We are born even more helpless. And the later development of our brains comes in a social, not biological, surround. The period after birth requires that the newborn get its needs met indirectly, that is, through someone else. In the womb, one’s needs are handled automatically by Nature and biology. One does not have to cry in order to get nutrients. However, the human newborn, in order to get its needs met in that time of dependency must communicate. At the same time, it also helps to be non-fussy, to smile a lot, and to be adorable. So these social requirements — conflicting as some of them are (that is a whole other story; we’ll get to it) — are put upon our infants. So it is that in Womb with a View I bring out the mythological, psychological, and archetypal elements and relate them to underlying womb, and to some extent birth, events. Yet, in the book following this one in the Series, Cells with a View (expected publication, 2025), I do the same regarding cellular events, our experi- ences around conception, that is, peri-conceptionally. In both cases, wombular and cellular events, my view is that they overlay and configure the way we will view what might be considered truly non-Formular events or entities. What I will say is consistent with what I have laid out in The Secret Life of Stones related to biologically-constituted realities, in particular the bioculturally-constituted realities. Consistent with what I said there, my aim will be to show how by wiping away the distortive effects of biocultural experiences at birth, in the womb, and around conception, we might come closer to purer perception. This is how, indeed, we cleanse the doors of perception; that is, by clearing away the personal pain and pre- and perinatal trauma imbuing and slanting them, if not out and out creating them. In doing this clearing away of fear- and pain-laden prompts to our perception and interpretations of it, we might approach that view ec-static, that cosmic overstanding that is normally denied us out of the fact that we have such powerful determinants on our perception at the beginnings of our lives as the traumas prenatally and perinatally.
