Miranda was standing calmly among the wreckage of the doorway in her usual, wholly inappropriate uniform. When a breeze cast itself across the barren landing bays, her frilled skirt fluttered. Marcus felt a lurch in his stomach as he considered the maid too a possible casualty of this attack. But Miranda met his gaze at once and smiled sweetly for him. And when he turned back to Elm, he saw that a change had come over the tall woman. Gone was the condescending smirk and the cool gunslinger’s gaze. In their place, horror. “Oh, fuck!” And across the space, the voice of Raven. “Disengage limiters.”

As the rest of the group caught sight of the newcomer, the shadow began to glow with the fiendish light of a beam weapon. “As if she’s the diversion,” came a deep, powerful voice. “And I’m the real problem.”
