There are 15 days remaining before the Blazers open the 2026/27 season. This year, Draft Positions is the order of the countdown. Three players were selected by the Blazers with the 15th pick but only one would wear the Blazers uniform, with two from the same college.

Named the ACC-Player of the year as a junior at the Univ. of Virginia when he averaged 21 points, Barry Parkhill was expected to provide scoring off the the Blazers bench behind Geoff Petrie when he was selected in the 1973 NBA Draft. Parkhill instead chose to play closer to home, signing with the Virginia Squires of the ABA, becoming the first UVA player to play in either league, and averaged 6.4 points in his two seasons in Virginia. The 6’-4” guard was traded to the Spirits of St. Louis in 1975 and went undrafted in the 1976 ABA dispersal draft. Parkhill moved in the collegiate coaching ranks, spending the next 16 years before joining his alma mater in various positions since 1992. In 2002, Parkhill was recognized as one of the top 50 ACC players history.
In the 1982 NBA Draft, Jeff Lamp became the fourth UVA player selected by the Blazers since 1973. When he made his pro debut with Portland, he was only the third Virginia player to play in the NBA. The 6’-6” small forward played three years with the Blazers, averaging 4.7 points in 177 games. Lamp played a total of 291 games in five years in the NBA as well another four years in Europe before retiring in 1993
The Blazers selected Justin Jackson from North Carolina in the 2017 NBA Draft, and promptly traded him with Harry Giles to the Sacramento Kings for Zach Collins. Jackson played three years with the Tar Heels, averaging 18.3 points in his junior season before declaring for the draft. In the NBA, the 6’-8” forward played seven years, averaging 6 points, with a few stops in the G-League.

Griffin, playing his first game in nearly a year, missed his all of the 2009/10 regular season after suffering a stress fracture in his left knee in the final preseason game. He was expected back in January of 2010, but when the knee did not heal, surgery forced him to miss the rest of the season. He will make his regular season debut on Oct. 27 when the Blazers visit the Clippers.

The future Blazer hit the total for his team, Cibona Zagreb, in a game against Olimpija Basketball Club. Petrovic connected on 40 of his 60 field goal attempts and all 22 free throw attempts.

According to reports, Petrovic was nervous before the game, wanting to break the Yugoslav First Basketball League scoring record of 74 points, set in 1962 by Radivoj Korac. According to Igor Durovic, who was guarding Petrovic that game, "He (Petrovic) broke the promise that he would leave the game after he breaks the previously set record."

For Portland, six players hit for double-digits while Feher, Greg Griffen (16 points), and Mike Bratz (10 points) were the only Suns to reach double-digits of the 14 that played .Prior to the game the Blazers announced they have traded Rich Laurel to the Atlanta Hawks for a second round pick in 1978 plus, as Portland VP Stu Inman added, "some cash now, some future cash, and other future considerations."

Former Blazer forward John Johnson, who was recently traded by the Houston Rockets to the Boston Celtics, has been returned to Houston. "This is the most outrageous misrepresentation of a contract that I have seen in 31 years," said Celtics President Red Auerbach, who would not elaborate, but added, "I want it perfectly understood this has nothing to do with John Johnson." Johnson was traded by Portland to the Rockets in Nov. 1975.

A three-time Academic All-American at Kansas, Darnell Valentine was the Blazers second first round pick in the 1981 NBA Draft. The 6’-1” point guard backed up Kelvin Ransey but moved into the starting lineup after Ransey was traded following his rookie season. Valentine started the first 35 games before being sidelined with a stress fracture in his foot. Despite other minor injuries that limited Valentine to 300 games with the Blazers, Valentine outlasted Ransey, Fat Lever, and Steve Colter before finally being supplanted by Terry Porter in 1986. Valentine played 9 years in the NBA and three more in Italy before retiring in 1994.

A 6’-5’ shooting guard Ronnie Murphy averaged 22 points during his senior year at Jacksonville Univ. while shooting .466 from the field. Selected in the 1987 NBA Draft, Murphy later admitted he arrived in Portland out of shape, and soon suffered a “stress reaction” in his foot, which made Murphy start his rookie season on the injured list. Activated in mid-December, Murphy would play 18 games in his single season in Portland, which ended in March after another foot injury. Still dealing with a weight issue in his second season, Murphy was waived on December 7, 1988, which he later challenged as he was still injured at the time. The Blazers settled with Murphy, who never played in the NBA again. The Blazers selected 6’-5” shooting guard Aaron McKie in the 1994 NBA Draft as a potential replacement for Clyde Drexler, which he did after Drexler was traded, starting 20 of the remaining 25 games. The Temple grad averaged 10.7 points and 2.5 assists in his second in Portland. McKie, who retired in 2007 after playing 10 games with the Los Angeles Lakers. joined the Philadelphia coaching staff, with Los Angeles still retaining his playing rights. On February 1, 1988, while an assistant coach with Philadelphia, his playing rights were included in a trade between the Lakers to the Memphis Grizzlies. The NBA approved the trade after Los Angeles signed McKie to a contract in order to trade him. Memphis released him after the 2007/08 season. At the age of 17 years, 255 days, Jermaine O’Neal became the youngest player to ever to be drafted into the NBA, when he was selected in the 1996 NBA Draft.
