I've always read a lot, and throughout childhood was always creating epic space comic strips (unfortunately my drawing was pretty terrible).
Then at some point I read a million-selling novel and thought, I could do better than that!

I've always liked writing, I've been writing since I was nine and realized people wrote books. But the thing that made me want to be serious about it was discovering science fantasy and modern faerie tales. My mind was BLOWN and I thought to myself, "I need to be part of this."

I've told this before. I've always written. But what started me writing romantasy was a dare from my roommate. We were watching the anime isekai: In Another World With My Smartphone... which I quite like, and she does not...
And she dared me to do better.
So I did!
I was what was known as a precocious reader. I read over 200 books in 2nd grade as part of our eager reader program. But what tipped me from reader to writer was a teacher. She gave me an assignment to write a story about a gargoyle as part of a medieval unit. I haven't stopped since.
#PretendPanel Oct 9: It's always been there, so far as I can remember. One of my earliest efforts was Last Unicorn fanfic that I made my mom write out for me and then made my cousins act out with me. I wanted to be a part of fantastical worlds and also make up my own. Nothing's changed! π
Spite XD I was reading one of the old EU Star Wars books, when I was, like, 12, and was super annoyed by how they handled Luke (I was a fanboy). I was arrogant and annoyed enough to really go 'I can do better' and started writing my own SW story. I didn't even know what fanfiction was!

I've always been a storyteller, even before I could physically write. I'd tell my mother stories that she'd type up (now lost to the sands of time) and I was always scribbling in a notebook, or once I got a computer, writing in Word. So I don't really have an origin story, per se.
I wrote a sci-fi novella at age ~9, but what really mashed the "You're a writer, Scarlet" button was in 8th grade (age 12) being assigned to write a short story in history class.
The teacher told my Mom that mine was the best in class.
Been chasing that high ever since.
#pretendpanel I'm going to genuinely try to remember what kicked off my desire for storytelling...
I watched Pinocchio as a kid and was obsessed with drawing the donkey kids trying to escape their corrals on Pleasure Island. I wasn't writing but drawing my fanfics. π
When I was 6 or 7, I wrote fanfic for the first time (Sailor Moon). Since then, I never stopped. I wrote fanfic all through my adolescence, teen years, and 20s. I roleplayed a lot, too. Not consistently, of course, but enough that I could see my skills progress over the decades. #PretendPanel
I've mentioned how I started writing, but what really kicked it off was my second grade "newsletter."
I wrote a story of a unicorn becoming friends with a chipmunk (that was the entiee plot π€·ββοΈ). And my brain just clicked: I could write whatever I wanted.
Hasn't stopped yet.
Disney movies and Sonic. I remember watching Mickey's Christmas Carol and imagining my OCs helping Scrooge or Shadow from Shadow the Hedgehog. Being so young, I didn't yet know how to publish books until I was 9. I love writing stories and putting my own childhood ocs in them.
#PretendPanel I've been writing since I was old enough to read. I can't not write.
I know this is such a clichΓ© of an answer, but it's true.
I genuinely don't remember a time when I wasn't making up stories. I started writing them down and illustrating them as soon as I was able to. I'm better at the writing part now, not so much at the drawing π

Baby Ewan wanted to see himself in Star Wars, so he wrote some lil fanfiction π
But seriously, I had ideas thanks to other books and games and anime and things, and I wanted to get them out. I wanted to explore my own ideas around sex, and mainstream wasn't doing it. Now I'm here! π
As a kid, I was given virtually free rein of my mother's fantasy books, and it was while I was reading David Eddings' Belgariad series that I thought hey. Maybe I can do that.
As a kid I drew maps and spaceships, and now I've learnt to actually write good stories into them!
#pretendpanel 9 Oct: origin story?
Been everywhere in my writing from winning a TV show at 10, to poetry comps, journalism, academia, non-fiction but what sparked me back into fiction was my love of Japanese writers

I did a very early version of Dido on the Edge back in 2011(?) and kinda had no idea how to get past the first act. Years later I looked at it again and decided I'd have a go at finishing it. And I actually stuck to that and sort of figured out how to write a book along the way (2/2)
