Karl Knights with "I’m the Passenger, Giving Wrong Directions on Purpose" featured in the September issue of POETRY. #PoemoftheDay

Green graphic with white text: Nothing too far out. Three minutes here and there.
Keep left at the village’s one Georgian window.
Dawdle along Priory Road, backtrack to Angel Lane.
Blame it on winter, no streetlights for over an hour.
Once we clipped a small deer, saw him hobble back
into the trees. For a second I wished we’d hit him
full on. No one hurt. Car damaged, not a write-off.
Shattered headlights, blood trail across cat’s eyes. In green text under a green pegasus is the name Karl Knights.

This poem by Pádraig Ó Tuama asks us to re-orient how we think about loss, memory, and closure

That loss is not always final or absolute

Remembering is not always a good thing, forgetting can be an act of self-care

The ending of a book is the nature of stories

One of my ‘nerdy’ hobbies is collecting coins. I have an almost complete set of Irish pre-euro coins

I remember having a ‘punt purse’ for going on holiday

In this poem Heaney laments the loss of Ireland’s coinage following the adoption of the Euro in 2002

Poem - 'A Keen for the Coins' by Seamus Heaney

A Keen for the Coins

O henny penny! O horsed half-crown!
O florin salmon! O farthing wren!
O hare! Oh hound! O snipe, O bull!
O mint of field and flood farewell!
Be Ireland’s lost ark, gone to ground,
And where the rainbow ends, be found.

Today is European Day of Languages

I've a good friend who spoke Ulster Scots until he went to secondary school and was beaten by the teachers until he spoke properly

Here Liz Berry recalls her & her father’s love of Black Country dialect before school robbed her of language

Green graphic with white text: and when i raised my eyes a little higher, i saw human wishes. i saw moons blessed with the deepening moan of night. i saw winds that traveled across thousands of miles of mothers who were silent now and draped over their flashlights. i saw lands going back to sleep and doors opening both ways. The name Paul Martínez Pompa is in green below a green Pegasus.
