Chloe rolled over onto her stomach, one hand questing for Lucifer on its own. She was only partially awake, most of her mind caught up in the haze of some random dream she was already forgetting, and she wasn’t willing to give that up just yet. She was too comfortable, some part of her aware that she didn’t have to get up early today, and so she wanted to drift off again. Her hand found Lucifer’s arm and closed around it. There. She settled that much more, her brief thoughts already quieting— “Good morning, love.” His voice broke through it all, drawing her back to consciousness more than she liked. “Mmm.” She really thought she didn’t have to get up yet. Maybe he’d take the hint and let her sleep… She felt him shifting on the mattress, and then his lips were pressing against her temple. “You can sleep a while longer. I’ll be downstairs.” “Mkay,” she mumbled, and a moment later, her hand was on its own again. She sighed, curling her arm into the covers instead. Her brain didn’t seem to mind, though, because she didn’t even hear the door close before she was dozing off again. It was nice. The next thing she knew, cool air was hitting her bare back as the covers slowly slid away. She made some garbled noise of protest, trying to burrow back into the covers. Almost immediately, Lucifer’s lips were on her skin again, just below her neck. “Chloe, love,” he murmured. He placed a trail of kisses down her spine as he moved the covers away, one hand caressing her side, replacing the warmth she’d been missing. That felt nice, too. She stopped squirming. “Happy birthday.” She smiled, finally opening her eyes. Right. Today was her birthday, which explained why she was getting such a lovely wakeup call this morning. Not that he ever needed the excuse. “Are you awake now?” he asked, still slowly pulling the covers down. She could feel his smile against her skin. “No,” she said. “You’ll have to keep going.” He laughed once, low and soft. “I was going to do that anyway.”

Chloe hugging Trixie in episode 1x13snippet of chapter 51: Dan had to drive, because Chloe hadn’t yet been able to get a replacement after her car exploded. She spent the entire drive gripping her phone, fear mounting with every minute that she didn’t hear from Lucifer. Sophie lived half an hour away; even with Dan using his sirens, it was taking too long to get there. She tried calling Lucifer, but he didn’t answer, and she couldn’t stop thinking the worst. And then Dan got through dispatch to hear what’d happened. Shots fired with three injured. They didn’t know more than that. By the time Dan found the park and pulled up as close as he could, her nerves were completely shot, her heart pounding too hard. She was shaky from too much pent-up adrenaline. Before the car was fully at a stop, she opened the door and ran out, scanning every single face for one she knew. Officers were moving around, with an ambulance waiting—but they weren’t there. Then she saw Trixie sitting on a bench with an officer, and all the breath rushed out of her at once. “Trixie.” She was already running forward when Trixie lifted her head and jumped off the bench. The officer tried to stop her, but she slipped past and ran to meet Chloe. “Trixie,” Chloe said again, crouching down to envelop her in a hug. There was blood on her clothes. “Are you all right?” Trixie clutched her tight and started crying. “Mommy. Lucifer got hurt. He was bleeding so much and—and he didn’t get up like last time—” She went cold. No. He was supposed to be invulnerable again—he couldn’t have gotten hurt like that, he— She looked around, terrified she’d see his body lying still on the ground. There was no sign of him, but she couldn’t see the whole park. “Are you all right?” she asked again, before she could fall apart right then and there. Trixie. She had to take care of Trixie. Trixie just kept sobbing into her shoulder. “Monkey, I know it’s scary, but I need to know if you’re okay. Please just say yes or no.” “Yes,” she choked out.
