Episode 212 celebrates our 4th anniversary with Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys!

212 episodes. Countless questionable decisions. One very dangerous spinning wheel.

We’re celebrating the only way we know how: TURN IT UP.

The story of how #JimiHendrix came to do a cover of #BobDylan's #AllAlongTheWatchtower.

Some of the best ideas really do come to people at parties, it seems.

It’s true, the Jimi Hendrix Experience became, possibly, the unlikeliest of US #OneHitWonder honorees in 1968… “All Along The Watchtower” became their first, and unfortunately, their only single to reach onto the US #Billboard #Top40. #JimiHendrix #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

“All Along the Watchtower” started as a Bob Dylan song, but Jimi Hendrix turned it into a thunderstorm of sound… His version is so definitive that even Dylan tended to lean into Hendrix’s arrangement live. #JimiHendrix #BobDylan #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

America caught fire after Monterey Pop… In 1967, Jimi Hendrix went to Monterey Pop as a relative unknown in his own country & walked off that stage a legend. Flaming Strat, feedback, “Wild Thing” chaos… America finally caught on to what London already knew. #JimiHendrix #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Chas Chandler of The Animals saw Jimi Hendrix at Cafe Wha? In NY in September 1966, heard the way Jimi reimagined blues & R&B, and made his pitch: come to London and cut a single. London was the rocket fuel Jimi craved. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was born. #ChasChandler #JimiHendrix #OneHitWondered

Here’s an interesting clip of young Jimi Hendrix in the backing band for Buddy & Stacey, doing “Shotgun.” It’s reportedly Jimi’s first television experience… #JimiHendrix #Buddy&Stacey #OneHitWondered #MusicSky

Before the pyrotechnics, Jimi Hendrix was experienced on the Chitlin’ Circuit… Tough crowds, and no dead air allowed. Those one-nighters taught survival… be in tune, in time & entertainin, or get replaced. First with the Isley Brothers, then Little Richard. #JimiHendrix #OneHitWondered

Day 28: A song with a tritone substitution.

"Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix

The opening guitar riff relies on the Hendrix chord (E7#9), which contains an explicit tritone to give it a bluesy, psychedelic bite
