In fact it took me a long time to finish this book as I was eking it out and restricting myself not to read it all at once (unfortunately I don’t do this with chocolates), but alas all good things must come to an end. This book is a modern collection of stories about ghosts and the things that haunt us and there’s a few factors that make this such a great collection, there are some really original ideas as well as new takes on more familiar tropes and these touch on a range of different social issues/themes plus the author has a distinctive voice that shines through all these stories. But, the two things that really elevate it for me are the descriptions of places which are so rich and evocative, and the dialogue, whether it’s between characters or inner monologues, the dialogue is authentic and makes the characters so believable and real. It’s hard to pick a favourite (peanut butter cups or your own personal preference) as I enjoyed them all but, the story that was the absolute stand out for me is ‘On Midwinter Hill’. This is about a lonely single mother visiting her parent’s graves on Christmas Eve. The ideas in this story were so original and the description of the cemetery was really beautiful (I am a self confessed taphophile so this was perfect for me), and while the story was sad and touched on loss it was also shot through with bursts of humour which contrasted well. Also being able to sum up the essence of grief in one sentence is a testament to how good the writing is. This is one of the best short stories I have ever read. Ironically, for stories of ghosts and hauntings they are so very human and so very full of heart. I can’t wait to see what comes next from this author.

After today’s picture description l have written a short horror tale for my capture. Our black-and-white photograph captures a quiet, shadowy forest. Two prominent tree trunks stand in the foreground, their branches reaching upward into a dense canopy. Ivy climbs around the base of the tree on the left. In the distance, the woodland fades into deep shadows and blurred foliage. Bright sunlight streams through the trees on the upper right, creating a striking contrast between light and darkness and giving the scene an eerie, mysterious atmosphere Finally, our picture today is finished with a white border frame. And now for my story. I call it… “The Forest That Remembered” They called it the Whispering Wood, a forest where no one dared to walk after sunset. One autumn evening, a young man named Daniel ignored the warnings. As he followed the narrow path between the trees, the forest grew strangely silent. Even the wind seemed to disappear. Then he heard footsteps behind him. He turned. Nothing. He walked faster. The footsteps followed. At last, he reached an old tree split into two enormous branches. Moonlight, (or so he thought) , filtered through the canopy. Beneath the tree stood the faint outline of a woman in an old fashioned dress. “Why have you come?” she whispered. Daniel could barely speak. “I was looking for the way out.” The woman pointed deeper into the forest. “Then you must remember the way in.” Suddenly, the trees seemed to shift around him. Every path looked unfamiliar. The woman smiled sadly. “Everyone who enters leaves something behind.” Daniel closed his eyes and remembered the path he had taken. When he opened them, the woman was gone, and sunlight was breaking through the branches. He ran towards it. Years later, Daniel would sometimes wake in the night convinced he could hear footsteps outside his window. And somewhere in the darkness, the forest was still whispering his name.
