From Epic Fantasy WIP, Waking the Saints, Queen Lualih has finished her audience and meets an unexpected intruder. Previous skirmishes with the Northmen make this ambassador suspect.

Lualih tore the pins from her coolan and handed the crown to her lady-in-waiting. Her head floated, released from the weight, as she escaped the audience room to a back hallway of the palace. “Lady Juho, did you bring the maps?” Lualih peeled a sweaty partlet from her shoulders, tossing it to the hovering servant following her brisk steps. A portrait of a stiff woman dressed in an ancient mode, some forgotten second or third wife of a Huxen king, graced the wall. Even here, the luxury of an artist’s craft consigned to an obscure corner. The map of Gorel barony slid into Lualih’s hand. She glowered at the shadow of Master Vetal on the page, without slowing her walk. “How many of Gorel’s neighbors–” An unframed door opened ahead of her, admitting a fur-capped man with braided white hair and a long tunic. “Blessings upon you, Your Majesty. A moment of your time?” Master Vetal shoved the stranger against the wall, shielding Lualih with his body. Another painted ancestor passed judgment from within a gilded frame. “Is this how you greet a foreign dignitary?” the Northman protested. Vetal continued to pin the man’s arms. “You’ll note my lethal weapons are still sheathed. Who are you and how did you get in here?” “Ambassador Quimmik, at your service. As the ambassador from Chief Bear, I knew I was unlikely to get a formal audience, so I observed where Queen Lualih went between appearances.”

From my Epic Fantasy novel Demon’s Bargain. Malgrim brings Abber disguised as his apprentice to the Huxen Ambassador’s ball. Abber wants news of her father Grath. She didn’t know her copied white braids had special meaning in Ferruth.

“Your Excellency, I mean no disrespect to your traditions,” said Malgrim, his empty goblet slipping from his fingers to land noiselessly on the sound-deadening rug. Abber caught a terrified look from the servant boy. After a moment to rub his palms on his trousers, Malgrim met Bizal’s gaze. “You could rely on an impious Grath to accept my minstrels.” Bizal stopped in mid-snarl, his disgust sliding into a grin. “Oh, he just might, the brash fool. The Silvern Patrician wrote that Grath had a mistress somewhere in the barony, complete with a brood of bastards. What was the name of that place? The Terrick courier kept asking about Grath’s bastards.” Abber clutched at Malgrim’s shoulder, pulling him to stand. “Will you agree to the contract?” Malgrim asked. Bizal’s face hardened as his eye landed on Abber. “Leave your servant to finish the paperwork and I’ll agree to the contract.” Abber squinted at Bizal. She wanted to dance with the handsome Vetal, not this oaf. Malgrim glanced at Abber nonchalantly. “You have a few things to learn about Ferruthan customs, Your Excellency. Agree to the contract and I’ll have it on your desk by sunrise. More importantly, Grath is getting information from Bivmiav, which means he has a source here. My minstrels can troll every tavern in the city and find them.” Bizal jerked back, eyes wide. His face hardened moments later. “Agreed.” Malgrim brushed biscuit crumbs from his trousers as he stepped back. “Give my prayers of fertility to your wives, Your Excellency, and may your road be guided by Parkith,” Malgrim said. “Next time you negotiate in Ferruth, make sure you treat a woman with white ribbon braids with utmost respect. It means she’s been recently married by a Silva priestess. She brings luck to the side that pleases Her.”

Her diamond earrings glittered in the light from the tall window. “Shall we arrive at a compact, you and I? For I feel we are alike.” “Do you.” She laughed, a low, throaty alto sound. “Indeed we are, you old monster. I see the shadow lurking behind you.” He felt again that power he’d felt gathering to her in the infirmary. Nothing in her manner threatened; yet Oghor’s hackles rose.

The white gulls’ raucous calling competed with shouted orders. And the strong briny scent of the sea reminded Aleeya she was far from the stately halls of the senate or the quiet library of the temple."
