Romans 8:35 (NKJV): Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? To Paul’s list I would add unemployment. As of this past Friday, I am no longer employed. It was not unexpected due to work volume, but it was not welcomed. It is never welcomed. But at this point in my life, it is also something that has happened many times before. Most of those times, the sudden unemployment was not my fault. It happened because of circumstances out of my control. A couple of times, I had something to do with what happened. I am not perfect and completely innocent after all. The first couple of times, I panicked. Over time, I have learned that Jesus still loves me in these times. Jesus still walks with me. Jesus still cares for me. In the good and the bad times, Jesus is there. I am never forsaken by Jesus. So, I have come to learn that Jesus will watch over me in love and mercy. I have learned that even if something bad happens, it is only temporary. I have also learned if that “temporary” lasts a lot longer than I expected that Jesus is still there for me. If the world is not working the way that I want it to, Jesus is still there with me and walking through it with me. I have learned that I am not alone. Jesus is there for me. Today’s verse is a reminder that even if we think that a bad time is stuck to us like glue, it is only temporary. The only thing that is truly permanent is the love of Christ Jesus. Today, may we start to move about our lives in a way that shows that we believe that Jesus loves us and will not abandon us.

Proverb 13:12 (NKJV): Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life. The Hebrew word that is translated “hope” is derived from the word meaning “to wait”. It contains the idea of patience. I think that is why hope is so difficult: it requires waiting and being patient. All my life I have grown up in a “now” world. I want dinner “now”, so I toss a pre-made dinner in the microwave. I want some toy “now”, so I whip out the credit card. I want it “now”, so things have been created to make things more instant. The “now” culture ends up making things more streamline by using things that are not completely healthy to us. The microwave dinners have all sorts of chemicals in them to help preserve them and make them easier to cook quickly. Too much debt will bring about negative consequences on our lives. Things built too quickly do not last and wear out quickly. The same is true in our spiritual lives. The microwave solution is usually very temporary and can do lasting harm to our relationship with God and others. When we learn to be patient and wait on the LORD, we learn more deeply the love and care that God brings into our lives. When we wait upon the LORD our God, we find ourselves learning how to live in the forgiveness and peace that is offered us. When we learn to wait upon the LORD our God, we find that find life more abundantly. We find moments of joy in our lives. We find moments of obedience in our lives. We find moments of love in our lives. Today, may we start to wait more on the LORD our God and live out of the love and mercy already given to us.
