My friend, Sonjamarie Weems, provides an excellent example of how we — humans in general — misinterpret Nature’s ways looking through our cultural biases and filters. She says,

"I remember watching this documentary where a mother elephant killed her baby, and through tears I was thinking that was the cruelest thing I had ever seen another animal do. Years later I watched the same documentary and had a different perspective, because I saw that the herd was starving and that the baby was sick. A pride of lions were already tailing the herd. The mother, knowing that the baby would die first, killed it to likely prevent the agonizing death that she knew was coming to it. It’s hard for us to understand how a mother could do that. Think of the movie Titanic ... who wasn’t upset with the 3rd class mother for putting her children to bed in a sinking ship? Makes you think."

White man used to say Native Americans were savages because they would fight back ferociously in hand-to-hand combat. Indigenous people were depicted as “uncivilized” savages…

Ninth Descent — Farming

This increased our anxiety and mistrust and the consequent compulsion to control ... out of fear of lack of resources ... and the next part of Nature that compulsion was directed to was the plant kingdom. We began growing our food — horticulture — to augment our gathering and hunting. This led to farming, to the agrarian revolution, and to agriculture, in time.

Tenth Descent — Husbandry

Controlling now our food sources through planetmate flesh (meat) and the plant kingdom, the next step was naturally to begin growing those planetmates in place, just as we had their distant sister plants. This is called domestication of animals or animal husbandry.

Eleventh Descent — Sedentary Life and Storage

Now, all this sedentary living, required for farming and husbandry, made it that we could store more things, which we were not wont to do when we were nomadic and would have had to lug it with us. Hence, we were “settled” in place, and we stored things.

…somehow the pattern of molecules in a part of our bodies, inside ourselves, creates behavior. Things create actions; items in the physi- cal world impel beings to do particular things in particular ways, simply by the fact of their existence. This is like saying that my rock garden ... I’ll even give you, the pattern of my rock garden ... conceivably makes me, want to or not, get up at 7am, make coffee, put particular and specific clothes on, and travel in a particular car, to a particular place, to engage all day in particular and precise actions, at a particular job. Why, how fantastic!

Or, you might say, it is like our DNA are like gears in a magnifi- cent watch which, energy applied, results in all kinds of specific actions. However, this is looking at planetmates as things and objects — which is a byproduct of the objectification of Nature, wrought of our Newtonian-Cartesian dualism — which posits that the world is a machine with no consciousness. Disregarding for a minute the fact that that objectification of Nature is a mistake we make in our devolution from Nature through the process I am describing in this book, at least consider that reasoning has it that you do not exist either. Oh, your body exists, in this formulation, but you are not an experiencing being ... are you now? Hell, even mechanically you are reading these words with no consciousness or awareness in the mix!

Sixth Descent — Mistrust

Both traumas — birth trauma and fetal malnutrition — contributed to the growth of that Ego and affected our personalities in many and varied ways. Part of this was the way it made imperfect humans even more lacking in caring for their infants. Thus we “acquired” even more primal pain because of insufficient satisfaction of needs.

Mistrust of Nature Led to Control Compulsion

Altogether we learned, early in our lives, that the world around us could not be relied on. Consequently, we began an ever-increasing mistrust of the world, which manifested, critically, in our relation to Nature and our feelings about how well we could have our needs met in it. Since we mistrusted, we began controlling. Control came in to fill the gap of mistrust that lay between need and satisfaction.

For who do these activities harm? They are physically the equivalent of massaging. But since they do it in contrast to our cultural norms, we call these behaviors dishonorable. So who is not being honorable, really?

That kind of being judgmental about all of Nature, and placing it and all of its millions of species below us and judging them according to our arbitrary cultural standards is what makes humans the ignoble ones. Relative to “dumb animals,” that kind of superior attitude, wrought of neurosis and cultural bias, I would contend also makes us the more moronic of planetmates.

As for murder, yes, chimpanzees have been known, quite uncommonly, to murder. What is less passed along is that these are chimps who have lived in proximity to humans. These are not chimps in the wild. Take a look at the movies, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and/or Mighty Joe Young if you want to get an idea of why being around humans might instill murderous rage in an otherwise peaceable primate. While they are fiction, the reality is no less telling in regard to crazy-making humans.

Even the early studies on baboons and their “aggression” in…

From birth on — even before birth as the experiences a mother has are constituted by culture and affect therefore what a prenate experiences to at least some degree — culture puts a stamp on us. The cultural impression delimits the profile of our being and constrains our actions while facilitating others of ours. It opens and closes doors at the same time.

Within the outlines of that template, however, we are required to operate and make less fundamental choices. Those choices, patterned and restrained by one’s culture, vary from the most trivial ... what to have for breakfast ... to the profound and life-altering. This, for example, would involve decisions about career and spouse. And something has happened in the current historical era ... something integral to these times being labeled postmodern ... that has made those choices more difficult than they ever have been in history. Yet potentially more freeing, more fruitful, more productive of freedom and felicity, more fulfilling and satisfying can those decisions be than ever before. For in these times — immersed in a multicultural soup with near infinite numbers of potentials and choices — we are responsible, more than ever before, and not as much culture-family- society, for choosing and creating our identity, our path in life.

Culture Versus Instinct

That supposed “blank slate” we are born with — wrought of a pro- cess of forgetting utilized to fend off the overwhelming trauma of the time — has another important ramification. You might say that most species are born and are either immediately or soon enough able to fend for themselves. How they are able to do that is attributed to what we refer to as instinct.

We arrive at this determination of a factor of instinct, not empirically, but conveniently. By that I mean that instinct is not a thing-in- itself that we have discovered in Nature. No. We see that other planetmates are able to do all kinds of things without being taught, and since we do not have that same thing we cannot understand it. Not able to understand it we give it a name — instinct. Problem solved.

But what is it? Well, we say it is genetic. It is behavior laid down in the genes. And we have this further rather magical idea that…

Thus, we were beginning to have fetal malnutrition, because of our upright gait, which was another source of hellacious pain for us as neonates having vast consequences for human psychology. We stood up, and our soon-to-be-born children got really crowded in the womb. They were suffocating and starving in there, too.

Fifth Descent—Ego

Big brains were one way of dealing with this ever-mounting pain and trauma at our beginnings. However, concomitant to that was the creation of an Ego. In order to keep our early pain repressed as well as to seek the satisfaction of needs — now dependent on society for them — in a haphazard world, with no real certainty those needs would be met, we evolved an adaptation of consciousness that was split from Nature and removed from our experience of life. This Ego, being separate from experience, sought to act as a director or controller of the items of our consciousness as well as of our immediate environment.

Our egos were modeled upon our parents, of course. So we would have all the shortcomings they had. Or we would have others in response or in reaction to theirs. This is called human personality.

As mentioned, we see in the fossil records some evidence that our pelvic bones became wider for a while, which would have made birth somewhat easier. But what this probably meant, in actuality, is that the baby, needing twenty-one months in the womb, ideally, (we’ll get to that next chapter) was coming out at some point after nine months. It has been said, the bone records show a gestation of twelve months at one point. This would have been assistive to birthing ape- sized heads and with minimal birth trauma. What is more likely is that our skulls were the larger size and some of that extra gestation needed for the bigger brain’s maturation was still happening in the womb, and there was roughly the same amount of pain involved in birth as there is today.

Birth Pain Makes Us Humans

Birth Pain Caused the Feverish Minds of Humans, Which We Call Intelligence

To continue, remember that what is universally acknowledged to distinguish humans from other species is our intelligence and the elaboration of culture that comes from that. However, with the understanding of skull size, birth, and repression described above, we see these much-touted distinctions and claims to superiority to be merely the byproduct of our neocortical attempts to deal with unconscious pain, specifically, that of birth trauma.

PLANETMATES: THE GREAT REVEAL

Toward Species Relativism and Away from Anthropocentrism

I understand all this, but it struck me that this appraisal was not at all even-handed and suffered from some common biases of thought. I believe it is about time we rethink these prejudices, as we go about eliminating half the species on the planet, short term, because of uncontrollable human greed and insensitivity. Further, with the increasing awareness among humans about their own species- centeredness and the most promising rising up of valuing of planetmate consciousness ever in civilization — and the first since Native Americans — it seems that I should say something to address these common misunderstandings.

To begin: Cows engage in female/female mounting. So? Why is that not honorable? Similarly, some monkeys have been known to engage in female genital to genital stimulation (g-g rubbing, it has been termed) when celebrating. What is wrong with that? I would say humans are the ones who are culturally narcissistic and judgmental ... not to mention homophobic. For who do these activities harm? They are physically the equivalent of massaging. But since they do it in contrast to our cultural norms, we call these behaviors dishonorable. So who is not being honorable, really?

PREFACE

…commitments, careers, causes, service are most likely to return happiness? These are questions we all need to address in our youth, yet throughout our lives as well. They come out again specifically during mid-life, and particularly during the mid-life crisis.

Identity

The primary question of human existence is, “Who am I?” It is the starting place of philosophy as well as one’s identity. The question following that ... number two in priority in a human’s life, since we are act-ors as well as be-ings ... is, then, “Who to be?” We seem to have an inbred knowing that these two are connected: That what one does should be at least somewhat related to who one is.

While throughout human history those are the fundamental concerns of life, they have been taken care of quite readily through the mechanism of culture. Culture is your society’s way of being in the world, its way of thinking, its way of making a pattern out of the infinite possibilities of Reality to provide guidance and orientation in life and in relationship to all around us. It plays into one’s identity ... who to be ... in a huge way.

THE FOURTH DESCENT — FETAL MALNUTRITION

Page 41

Blank Slate and Forgetting

The upshot of all this is that humans, unlike all other species, experi- ence a forgetting, caused by trauma, at our very roots and even before birth. We forget our connection to the Universe, to Nature, and to the Divine. We forget our past lives, even. We are beginning to become that blank slate we will say afterwards that we were at our birth.

However, at the time it is not experienced as a blank slate or nothingness, as we experience ourselves as riddled through with fear and negativity. We feel ourselves to be a victim of our surroundings and begin doing the opposite of what all other species and even our earliest ancestors did during their times in late gestation: We split off from our rootedness in the mother and we cast that unyielding surround of the womb and placenta — and the mother, by proxy — into “the enemy,” needing to be fought. We create a duality between us and Nature, us and other people ... and in terms of how this comes out later in rampant misogyny, between us and women, if we are male.
