September 13, 1983, 43 years ago today: The Appalachian Trail descended alongside Moss Pond's outlet brook to Gentian Pond. A trail shelter was perched atop a small ridge flanked by the pond on one side and another great view to the south on the other.

A whitewashed evening sky with banks of clouds along the far horizon. Walking an alpine ridge crest along naked gray fractured granite surrounded by leafy ground cover starting to turn gold. Ahead the crest descends to and climbs over a wooded section with 3 large patches of open green alpine scrub, Next is a deep gap and then the crest arcs right as it ascends again over a series of lofty peaks and knobs. There are glimpses of more distant mountain ranges to the right and left.

September 13, 1983, 43 years ago today: After Page Pond, the AT scaled steeply up to Wocket Ledge. Open rock faces just off the trail provided the best southward views I had yet seen in the Mahoosucs. Clouds wreathed the peaks of Madison and Adams.

We are standing on the shore of a large mountain pond looking out between two trees and over some low shrubs. There are large boggy patches of water grass along much of the far shoreline, the lake and bogs are surrounded by a beautiful spruce and fir forest. Two descending wooded ridges come together at a low point near the middle of the far shore, creating an opening through which we can see the tops of a lofty mountain range several miles away. The sky is a deep light blue with a few streaky clouds, except for a line of low clouds running across that mountain range and covering the summits.

September 12, 1983, 43 years ago today: There was some steep, rocky scrambling down into the col between Mount Hayes and Cascade Mountain. Cascade was a visual feast.

#backpacking #hiking #AppalachianTrail

We are standing high atop a mountain, looking down along the very rocky ridge crest we have been generally ascending from the valley far below. The flanks of that ridge are wooded, as shrubs and then trees take over from the bare rock as your eye follows the mountainsides down. The valley below is mostly forest, but there is a very large green field with a complex of rather large buildings on it. The wooded flanks of lofty mountains rise from the opposite side of the valley. The sky is a mostly clear light blue. Everything is drenched in sunshine.

September 12, 1983, 43 years ago today: I had one final meal of solid food before resuming the backpacking phase of my trip today and my return to gourmet fare like rice and instant oatmeal.

Beneath a clear, bright very pale blue sky, everything in this pic is bathed in sunshine. We are standing on a jagged outcrop of light gray granite covered with pale green and dark green lichen high atop a mountain. To our right are 2 massive ridges running down from a lofty mountain just offscreen right. Their flanks are wooded, their rocky crests are open and covered with stunted dark green alpine vegetation which extends a short distance down their sides before gradually giving way to trees. Several trails are visible as meandering light gray strands. Beyond this mountain on the left are a series of wooded green mountain ranges cascading to he misty horizons. A massive spiderweb of intersecting ski runs stands out along the face of the closest of these mountains.

Beneath a bright sunny sky, hazy white and soft blue, we are standing atop an alpine ridge crest looking out over a forest of dwarf spruce and fir. Across a deep ravine is a massive ridge running down from our right towards a narrow valley on our left. The ridge's flanks are wooded, its crest is rocky with some alpine vegetation and an auto road running along it. Several thousand feet below us, the valley floor is mostly wooded, with a couple of green fields with buildings. Beyond the valley rise the forested slopes of another lofty mountain range.

September 10, 1983, 43 years ago today: When it finished with the cliffs, the Appalachian Trail traversed about a zillion steep little knobs known as the Wild Kittens.

We are standing high atop a mountain, looking across a slope below covered with a forest of spruce and fir, many of which are dead, bleached husks, probably victims of beaver. Hundreds of feet below, the feet of this mountain reach a narrow valley. A rural two-land runs through the valley, which is mostly forest, but there is a large farm and a scattering of buildings along the road. Beyond the valley rise the forested slopes of another lofty mountain range. The peak farthest to our right has a spiderweb of ski runs and lift lines scarring its slopes.

September 10, 1983, 43 years ago today: The AT joined the Lost Pond Trail for the first mile today, following the course of the Ellis River through Pinkham Notch and brushing the shore of a pretty lake.

Beneath a hazy whitewashed sky, we are standing atop some rocky cliffs hundreds of feet above a deep notch looking across that notch at a lofty mountain range towering thousands of feet above us. Two massive ridges slanting down towards us from that range frame our view on the left and right. The ridge to our left bears the white scars of an auto road and several trails. Its crest is rocky. The righthand ridge is more wooded. The two ridges embrace a massive inverted U-shaped valley running down the mountainside from a steep headwall where it meets the ridge crest. The valley is also densely wooded.

September 9, 1983, 43 years ago today: I made my way to Thunderstorm Junction, a spot where several trails intersect in a high saddle between three of the five peaks of Mount Adams.

#backpacking #hiking #AppalachianTrail

The views from the open alpine summit of Mount Adams. Beneath a soft blue, partly cloudy sky we can see every inch of the trail ahead from the pass below to the granite summit of Madison. Some low stunted trees, barely shrubs, clung to a few partially sheltered spots in and near the pass. The rest of the trail is across bare rock with patches of gold, grass-like plants about the height of a suburban lawn. Between the naked rocks there are green patches of small stunted shrubs or trees far down the sides of the mountain, nowhere near the ridge crest. Smaller wooded mountains are visible in the distance beyond Madison to our left.

September 9, 1983, 43 years ago today: Last night’s weather forecast called for increasing clouds today, with a chance of rain tonight. I drove to the Mount Washington Auto Road from Gorham, not expecting much.

Beneath a soft blue sky with hazy white clouds. Standing high up a mountainside on gentle slope covered with light gray granite rocks and a golden brown alpine plant that resembles grass. Many of the rocks are covered with light and dark green lichen. We are looking down along an alpine ridge crest that descends into a col and then arcs gracefully to our right as it climbs over 3 rounded peaks. Near and along the crest is naked granite rock and low alpine vegetation. Farther down their slopes more green vegetation begins to predominate. The valley and mountains beyond are hazy, but provide glimpses of a small city and outlying farms.

September 8, 1983, 43 years ago today: After Eisenhower, the trail descended into a col before another stiff climb up Mount Franklin, the first 5000-footer of the day. The sky had cleared very nicely by the time I reached this peak.

An alpine plateau in gold-tinged slanting evening sunlight beneath a soft blue sky. Much of the plateau and small portions of the peaks have a ground cover of golden grass-like plants with patches of green, leafy ground-hugging plants. Everything else is bare gray granite boulders and rock outcrops. Three nearby peaks rise above the plateau on our right. Beyond the three peaks, the top of a much higher peak is hidden by a long dark cloud, which casts a dark shadow on the rest of the peak and a spur ridge of that mountain.

September 8, 1983, 43 years ago today: It was mostly cloudy in Crawford Notch at 12:30 when I set out on the Appalachian Trail. A nice, stiff breeze was blowing, the air was fresh and dry, and the day was much cooler than the last few had been.

#backpacking #hiking #AppalachianTrail

We are high up a mountainside looking down over the treetops to a large valley below, mostly forested with a strip of 4-lane interstate running down its middle towards us and then bending to our right to skirt the mountain we are on. There are a series of high peaks flanking the valley to our right and left. A railroad cut stands out on the lower slope to our right. A maple just below us has turned a bright orange, all the other trees are still green.

#backpacking #hiking #AppalachianTrail

We are walking a trail through a field of lush green grass under a bright partly cloudy sky. Just ahead two trail signs mark the terminus of another trail joining the AT from the right. Just past the trail junction is a sprawling rather open grove of trees in full bud with pink, white or red flowers that continues along to the top of a knob. Beyond that knob rises the crest of a much taller mountain with wooded flanks and open, grassy stretches along parts of its crest. The two peaks of the mountain rise near the center top of the photo.
