Okay, the main setting is in a canyon-type desert. I figure there's a cliff dwelling carved into the side of an overhanging canyon. Cliff wrens build nests inside the buildings and in the windows and doorways; the openings are craggy.

It’s a collection of empty buildings along a single street, with the entrance to a mine shaft visible in the distance. Ruh-roh.
