Film 8: I Play Rocky (Surprise Film)

I had to leave I PLAY ROCKY halfway through as my friend got very ill all of a sudden. It was so bland and a bit boring I don’t think I missed much. Also, we kind of know how it ends, right? I think that’s me done for the surprise film, it used to be a fun tradition but nowadays… #LFF

MY NOTES ON MARS: MEN ARE FROM MARS, WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS (or vice versa). A singular yet compelling psychological drama about a warring couple crossing over a cosmic gap to rekindle the flame. I genuinely didn’t know where this was going and this is meant as a compliment #LFF

#LFF film 14: I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning
★★★★☆
A bunch of Birmingham friends enter their 30s under whatever stage of capitalism we're in now, in this beautiful but sometimes bleak film which just about musters enough hope and warmth amid all the heartbreak and tension

#LFF
In grief’s wake, how can we go on living normally like we’re not in immense pain if reminders of our loss creep up on us everywhere, every time? Everytime fantastically shows us how, and then some. Entrancing, distressing, radiant, real, ambiguous, magical. Left me appreciating Mouse even more.

#LFF
Mouse gets that grief opens up the colossal untalented mess in a lot of us. While far from remarkably written, the Ghostlight team’s dramedy has a vulnerability and texture that linger. And with its actors effectively bouncing off each other, it’s the purest reckoning of 2002 since Turning Red.

At the door to Life / Drawing, which included a few NFTS goodies and an Anna Mantzaris great, a guy asked me why I chose to see it. I told him I love animation, which was the reason he came as well. Hell yeah. Nice to see LIAF get a bit of promo at LFF! Keep up these adult animation programmes!

This year’s #LFF surprise film: I Play Rocky. Well done to everyone who guessed it.

Shout out to the #LFF projectionist who’s playing The Planets prior to the Carl Sagan documentary 🥰

Be funny if the #LFF Surprise Film is Birdman again, as a bit

Travis Knight's wonderful stop-motion feature WILDWOOD isn’t afraid to have its characters grapple with real-world darkness and complexity. #LFF
