She gripped the handle of her pickaxe, and when the demon heard her and was about to turn around, she buried the pointy end in its back. Screeching, the oni whirled around, dragging Sareena with it and bashing her into the wall. Lungs burning, she saw, out of the corner of her eye, the demon raising its pickaxe. She rolled out of the way, her injured shoulder crying out in protest, then slashed, getting the sharp tip stuck in the oni’s stomach. Claws sought her face as alarun dripped from the oni’s broad nose and splashed onto her rags. Unable to let go of the pickaxe because of the chains, Sareena pulled and pulled, straining her neck out of the fiend’s reach. Screaming in rage, she yanked with as much strength as she could muster. It ripped the oni’s stomach open, and she tumbled over its spilling entrails.

The first droplets of the wet season plopped down on Mileena’s head as she crossed Dueóng on Mínsên’s back. Around her, morning birds chirped to welcome the rain, a cloud of them hovering around a bulky dĩn’ay. One nû’ëngo raised their hands and stuck out their tongue to collect fresh raindrops. A lõn'obǐn painted a rainbow in the air to the delight of a group of seedlings while a káo’imě announced a new seasonal play debuting tonight at the Prism and Aurora Circus. With a smile on their face, a běr’úngo smelled a bed of newly bloomed roses to welcome their cycle, and preparations for the Trõgâ Amá Nìang—Day of Friendship—had already begun as groups of mixed species joined forces to weave the garlands that would adorn the heads of many. It had been many years since Mileena last wove one of those for her sister, and her sister for her. In that last year, they had also performed the Twinned Dance, a complex musical choreography that must be acted in pairs and can only be expressed in its true and wondrous form by those who shared an affinity as deep as the trunk with its roots. The people had showered the sisters with praise and gifts. But they both knew their dance had not achieved the mastery that the composers, also twins long returned to the earth, expected of their creation.

Unable to answer, Ashrah studied her enemies. Two other Nether-Touched composed the band, one with a gorgon-like tail and the other with pincers as hands and spikes running along their spine. Aside from the qsultar, the azahnu had also enthralled one afrizzt, three sfivh that must have survived the purging at Sybyk, a malcyn, a couple of insignificant imps, and a half a dozen oni wielding bows similar to Thurnull’s and curved swords dangling from their waists. A small battle, considering all the wars Ashrah had won. Distracted as it was, the azahnu might not even notice her until she recovered Datusha and plunged it into its throbbing brain. And with her sword, eliminating the rest would be easy. “This isn’t the time for dashing acts, wielder. You may think the azahnu is too absorbed in its study of me to pay attention to anything else, but that’s not how their brains work. They’re too sophisticated for such blunders, their awareness extending far beyond the boundaries of common minds.”

Dead dragoneir lay with demons, scales and horns shattered, their corpses forming a trail that led to the Conqueror. Shao Kahn stood before the dead colossus, his enamelled brown-and-orange armour, the same colour as the scales underneath, dented and scratched. Alarun smeared nearly every inch of his tall, muscular frame, dripped from the spikes along his forearms and tail, and painted his brown mane black. A fresh gash slithered between the antlers and spikes encrusting his large, wedge-shaped head, carving a trail through the narrow space between his orange eyes, whose slit pupils were now entirely focused on the two newcomers. “Your Highness.” Shao Kahn’s voice was a deep but resonating growl; not one that resounded with threat, but with an unsettling calm. “It is dangerous to be out here.”

Ashrah shredded the threads of Nether, then fell, fell… And landed with a hard thump on the heated ground of Ultarzzy. She jumped to her feet and inspected herself. Relieved to find every piece where it belonged, she sat back on her knees, exhausted by the astral travel and the madness she experienced. The Silk Queen trapped her, but it had not been the devil who summoned her to Sybyk. She entered the Astral Plane to find answers and came back with more and more urgent questions. Someone beseeched her for help, promising freedom as a reward. Ulorzz will imprison you no longer. Whoever it was, they knew her and knew what she desired. How? Chasing a disembodied voice through Arak’shiir would normally be foolish, yet… this one sounded different from every demon she had ever met. Its speech, vibrating with ancient knowledge, arose from unfamiliar depths to speak directly into her mind, and even now, its call for freedom resonated in her bones, in her spirit. She must go. She must learn this creature’s identity. And if they were nothing but a fraud, they would bitterly regret having ever deceived her.

A smile, but not nearly as jolly as hers usually were. Ashrah could not help but notice that her tail remained stiff, and she was beginning to suspect that it was not a consequence of the cold. “Right? No one wants that! It’s a thing from the Living Planes. You know how mortals are, always dancing on the knife’s edge.” “Those must be large knives.” Sareena laughed, and outside, the wind howled in protest. “Why do you laugh?” The Nether-Touched stared at Ashrah as her amusement faded. “You… are serious.” “I am always serious.” A sigh. “Aye, I noticed.”
