He comes home long after the Reapers rise in the eastern sky, shaking the snow from his boots. When the lantern shines in the snowmelt, blood gleams there like tiny garnets. “That’s your blood,” I say, seizing his arm. His coat is torn, the ragged edges stained red, but the insulating layer veils his injury. I tug at the opposite sleeve. “Take this off.”
