why doesn't my opinion matter to you?
this isn't how I thought love would be
trying to care leaves me black and blue
why doesn't my opinion matter to you?
your bad mood continues to accrue
I don't belong here - why can't you love me?
why doesn't my opinion matter to you?

South Sioux City Isn't Real

now look
I get it

you can point to roads
and buildings
and articles of incorporation
to name me liar

but come on
you're by a river

Nebraskans are not river people

we prefer the cycle
and steadiness
of earth and corn

which assuredly is why
Sioux City has many
while Nebraskans consider

then blush
and look away
Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every leaf speaks bliss to me
Fluttering from the autumn tree.
I shall smile when wreaths of snow
Blossom where the rose should grow;
I shall sing when night’s decay
Ushers in a drearier day.
