People who experienced sugar rationing in their first 1000 days of life had more favorable brain health and lower dementia risk with later onset, an analysis in Neurology suggests.

The UK Biobank health data included 64 737 adults born before and after September 1953, when postwar sugar rationing ended. When looking at patient records, those exposed to sugar rationing before birth and during the first 1 to 2 years of life had a lower risk of developing dementia than those who were not exposed. And when dementia developed, the onset was about 2.6 years later among this group.

The study also found healthier brain structure on imaging and stronger cognitive performance among people who experienced early-life sugar restriction. Lower rates of type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure explained about one-quarter of this protective effect, researchers estimated.

Researchers noted these findings may suggest early-life sugar reduction as an avenue for supporting brain health and lowering dementia risk, but further investigation is needed.
