It features a soft pastel blue-turquoise head, neck, and underparts, a warm chestnut-brown back, and a striking bright turquoise tail tip. It has a stout black beak, dark eyes with a slight black stripe extending through them, and is set against a soft, out-of-focus background of blue sky and subtle green foliage. Clue: This brightly coloured visitor to Europe and Western/Central Asia gets its common name from the striking aerial acrobatics, flips, and rolls it performs during courtship flights! Fun Fact: Nestlings of this species have a unique self-defense mechanism: when threatened by predators, they vomit a foul-smelling orange liquid all over themselves! This deters hungry attackers and alerts returning parents to potential danger around the nest.
