A space marine from Warhammer40k with a flamethrower being painted.
1. This is just primer, rougly applied. It approximates my shadow colors. The light is set above and to the front and I use that for lighting reference. 2. Very roughly blocking out the main light and shadow areas. 3. A bit more work on the skin. Nothing is done except for the eyes which I like to finish first because it's very messy for the area around them. At this point I realized that I don't want to paint the metal tips on the boots so I decided to shave them off. Really wish I had done that before painting. 4. I've done more work all around but nothing is really complete. At this point, I find it easier to take this photo and edit it on my computer to quickly try out the next steps. This is great for me because I can try many things in a relatively short amout of time. 5. Almost done. I ended up switching the light direction on the axe blade and kept it darker as the front side is angled slightly downwards. 6. Done and varnished. The light on the leg is weaker because of the matte finish. I intentionally wanted to suggest a matte surface for the fabrics, but now I'm thinking it would have looked better with a highlight.
