From Haleakala - Maui, Hawaii
A large fruit bat hangs upside-down in daylight from a very tall gum tree. The Australian flying fox, whose grey colored head gives way to an orange-red neck and back, unfurls its black-brown wings and looks up from its slumber. The bat seems to have a stunned look, but even though the facial expression appears real, it’s a projection and solely anthropomorphic.

The sun pierces the forest canopy casting a warm glow on everything it touches. I feel much like the sunspots caught in my lens. It's Fall, the ferns on the forest floor have rebounded from the summer heat, although the lush canopy of Cathedral Grove provides much protection for the shade-loving vegetation: Further moderation is provided by nearby Cameron Lake. The trees on this part of the trail are young in comparison to some of the giants further in, many trunks, living and dead, exceed six feet in diameter.
