PROLOGUE: PRIMAL PSYCHOLOGY, FARTHER REACHES OF EXPERIENCE

…compete with the near perfection of an in-womb biological attention to needs as happens to other species. As well, the time in the womb — even though shorter than we would need for comparable, to other species, development at birth of our bigger brain — is still one of excruciating pain due to the extra crowdedness coming as a result of a bipedal mother. For the human mother, standing, compresses the fetus more than a primate mother whose posture, being on all fours, allows the fetus to hang loosely below it. Add that to the fact that a bigger brain itself is taking up space in the womb and contributing to fetal compression.

Finally, what results is that in the third trimester of gestation and especially when the mother is standing, the prenate’s weight bears down and compresses the arteries and veins of the mother bringing nutrients and oxygen. The fetus is thereby deprived of sufficient oxygen and suffers for that. Imagine a situation of being in a stuffy room for a time that seems endless and from which one cannot leave for three months. Reading that statement in itself might have you short of breath right now.

These factors in the third trimester, including placental insufficiency, extreme compression, and hypoxia (low oxygen) — which is a consequence of both the insufficiency and the compression — create a set of peculiarly human experiences prenatally, which I term the prenatal matrices of human evil, the PMEs.
Yet this is exactly the arrogance that prevails in all of our sciences. When we imagine other beings in our Universe, as we do in some of our arts, we anthropocentrically assume they would have human features, with only slight variations, with senses similar to ours and perceiving the exact same world, and that they would have evolved in some manner parallel to the way we did on Earth. That is forgivable in our arts and cinema, as in Star Trek and Star Wars, as they are not claiming to be science.

But what is damning and is embedded within and constraining the purview of our sciences is this assumption that the Universe as we have come to know it through our science, with its space, time, stars, Big Bang, galaxies, dimensions, planets, and so on, is the Universe in some ultimate way outside of our humanly limited perception.

What? You don’t think so? You think the cosmos we measure with our humanly-created technology and perceive with our human, our limited, senses, is pretty much like the one that exists outside our perception of it? That our perceived and arrived-at cosmos is the Cosmos? No doubt you think it has to be. You have never questioned it.

…researchers in particular: These are Stanislav Grof, Arthur Janov, and Lloyd deMause.

I call on the findings of all three researchers in constructing my theories. You might recall my referencing Lloyd deMause’s work already: I touched upon the aspect of our development he brings to light — fetal malnutrition and hypoxia — several times in this work. That would be in Dance of the Seven Veils I. You will see how, soon, we go more deeply into those ideas.

Elsewhere I pointed out, bringing in research from anthropology and related fields, how this fetal malnutrition is a product of our standing upright — becoming bipedal — for that affected the configuration of our pelvic bones; thus, it affected a mother’s ability to give birth. This I did in my works, Planetmates: The Great Reveal, and Falls from Grace: The Devolution and Revolution of Consciousness, both released in 2014. More recently, I detail this in my book, Prodigal Human: The Descents of Man (2016).

I explain in these places how this fetal distress, the result of bipedalism, is the major difference between humans and all other planetmates. Humans are the ones who suffer. Homo sapiens is the traumatized species ... the one with birth pain and fetal malnutrition. Thus, it is the neurotic one. Are you beginning to see how we might be the deluded one? The suicidal one, even?
Fourth Descent — Fetal Malnutrition

Another development that came with bipedalism is that in the late stages of gestation, the prenate would be so large that it would press against the blood vessels in the surrounding environment and inhibit the blood flow to the extent that nutrients and oxygen were not supplied sufficiently. A big part of that reduction of blood flow came out of the fact that standing…

“The hypocrisy of the charge of the Sixties Generation being Yuppies becomes even more blatant when considering their values. Sixties values included such selfless acts as risking, sometimes incurring, violence and personal harm, jail time, and a lower standard of living for the sake of their idealistic beliefs in peace, environmental restoration and preservation, and selfless communitarian living, among others. None of that has any overlap with Yuppie careerism, consumerism, materialism, or their individualistic greedy selfishness.”

“Post–high-school education was being turned into career- factories dedicated to producing compliant businesspersons, engineers, physicians, and scientists — folks who were not being educated to think for themselves, rather, how to achieve and make money in a culture with which the World-War-Two Generation was comfortable.”

This crowdedness is one of the roots of our development of bombs, in particular, nuclear ones. For it creates in us an unconscious draw toward events of being blown up. We experience a vicarious thrill when we observe the bombing — the shock and awe (notably phrased) — of a battle like was seen at the beginning of the Second Iraqi War. A part of us that we will not acknowledge knows that that thrill is actually our hidden delight of blowing up and exploding out of the womb at that hellacious unending time of crowdedness and suffocation.

Thus the idea of nuclear annihilation at any time — the possibil- ity that one will be, figuratively, “blown up” — has an unacknowl- edged psychic resonance with us. It feels somewhat comforting, even desired, this idea of exploding violently, much the way we might feel about ripping the scab off a wound or scratching an itch that we cannot reach. It has an unconscious draw ... or appeal. We want to “just get it over with.”

And that enchantment with it keeps us from being appropriately disturbed by such an unbelievable catastrophe and allows us to live with it; though if we were sane, it would not. Indeed, there is an element of counterphobia in our reaction to nuclear annihilation, with roots in that time of crowdedness and suffocation at fetal malnutrition, a kind of machismo, if you will, that pushes us to feel and act like, “Come on! Bring it on! Do your worst!”

Mass Extinction

Ed continued:

“So we have it that you have not only brought us all — and this is the point I’m getting to that requires me to speak whether you hear me or not — not only brought us all close to the point at which all of us could easily be gone.... And who knows how much of the planet would be uncontaminated as well.... And it could happen so quickly and so soon that even I might be forced to witness and be part of it.

“And for what? Again, your fear has made you hate everything outside of yourself ... why even everything inside of yourself too, we have noticed. So that we see that an alarming number of you would accept and not think it all that tragic if your crazy ways — the source of our concern for you as well as our humor — would result in the end of everything here.

“This, in total disregard of the billions of generations of your species and others on this planet that set entire lives to making this home of ours the best that it could be."
Secondary Altriciality, Prenatal Compression, Hypoxia, and Malnutrition

However, this prematurity of birth had consequences of its own. It resulted in a situation termed secondary altriciality, which means humans are helpless — i.e., altricial — for a time longer than any other species. This secondary altriciality of an extra year — which is the first year after birth — is roughly the amount of time we would ideally be still inside the womb in order for us to be born at the same level of development of our nearest primate relatives. So this time outside the womb is spent inside the womb for the other species closest to us.

Furthermore, because we are already being born premature, we end up staying in the womb the maximum time possible while still allowing the skull to be able to make it through, at birth ... which it is barely able to do to begin with! This means that we are in the womb an extra amount of time when it has become excessively crowded and when the placenta is already aging and becoming less efficient.

Thus we are damned if we do, damned if we don’t: With increasing birth trauma and infancy trauma causing larger brains, we suffer exceedingly because we are extra helpless when we are born; we are even more dependent on parental assistance for survival than any other species. Thus we suffer — acknowledged or not — from an imperfect parenting. For even the best of human mothers and fathers cannot

…totally unimaginable interpretations! As I said, our senses scan and pick out of an infinity of possibilities of what can be perceived. What it “notices” ... or “creates”? ... is relative to who we are as a species. Even the determination of that falling tree being an event is relative, hence questionable, ultimately. Relatedly, whether or not there is actually even a physical world in which it occurs is suspect and is something we will deal with at length and in due time in this book.

The Bias Invisible in Science

Regardless, the point of all this is that removing our anthropocentric blinders in this way we must conclude that the world, as experienced, is created of realities that are not only culturally constituted, as anthropologists point out. There are also biologically constituted realities. The “brute facts” to which D’Andrade refers are — nothing brute about them — biologically determined facts. How anthropocentrically arrogant for us to think that our brute facts are brute in some conceivable Ultimate Reality that all existing or conceivable living beings or entities share, meaning are able to perceive ... indeed are able to perceive ... pretty much the way we do!
The Prenatal Veil of Human Evil

In subsequent books, I went deeper, further back in our history to before birth, to the prenatal influences on our lives — those occurring before birth. This in particular, I did in Wounded Deer and Centaurs, also 2016. Doing so, we saw patterns even more profound; we saw possibilities even more promising.

In fact, the implications from including the prenatal perspective are vast — revolutionary, even. This new information calls for an overthrow, or a reversal, of the dominant paradigms in child-caring, child develop- ment, psychotherapy, and spiritual growth and practice. Most importantly for us at this time in history, these findings and insights have direct bearing on our current ecocidal and humanicidal plunge to oblivion. So, this vision is the most important one for understanding why we are doing what we are doing and then how we might do something to actually reverse that course.

Now, for the effects of prenatal and perinatal experience on life, history, and personality and behavior ... as well as the creation of evil ... a great deal of insight and knowledge has been advanced by three…

…altriciality. Because we were premature relative to our primate relatives in Nature, we had to have that period of twelve months, which in primates would be in the womb, outside in the world of society. That is to say, with people, basically the parents.

Now, this meant that we were experiencing pain at the beginnings of life through birth trauma, then also through the fact that parents could not possibly take care of the needs of an infant as well as Nature could, as is the case with our primate relatives who experience their comparable brain development in utero.

The Ticking Time Bombs of Fukushima and Hanford ... Nuclear Radiation, Nuclear Waste, and the End of All Life on Earth

“...there must be something awry in humanity to have brought about the end of life on Earth.... And for us to be blithely going about our days as if nothing is going on.”
“...the Yuppies were the creation of the WWII Generation in their attempt to reverse the course of society that their own daughters and sons, as ‘Sixties Youth,’ had put it on.”

“...the Vietnam-era or Sixties Generation began being denigrated in the press with the accusation, ‘The ‘Me’ Generation,’ and Sixties values were also denigrated — the scapegoating of the Sixties Generation continuing — despite the fact that it was a different age group in society, the younger Yuppies, who were actually the ones triggering the attack.”

“The hypocrisy of the charge of the Sixties Generation being Yuppies becomes even more blatant when considering their values. Sixties values included such selfless acts as risking, sometimes incurring, violence and personal harm,…
