This is like Ebola. It happens so fast, and you die so quickly, and infected person doesn't have time to spread it to large numbers of people. Unless they fly on a large plane or attend large, indoor gatherings like sports games or concerts. There are nightmare scenarios. #Russia #Plague

Seeing many posts about #plague, so a reminder:

Plague is serious -- an incident involving a high-containment lab warrants investigation.

Right now, we have an unexplained death from pneumonia, NOT confirmed plague or evidence of an outbreak.

Watch closely. Avoid speculation. Follow the evidence.

Do I trust the Russian government to give us the full story on what happened?

No.

Do I trust our government to competently address this if it becomes a serious issue?

Also no.

Why do we play around with this crap in the first place? #Plague

Meanwhile, #Ebola continues to worsen in DRC with 8,300 cases. 4,018 deaths since May

Yet much of the world and the media seems to have moved on.

The beaked mask belongs to history, but Yersinia pestis never disappeared.

The reports of plague returning are unsettling - let's hope for early recognition, prompt antibiotics and strong public health surveillance...

Authorities in Baykalsk urged residents on Oct. 3 to temporarily avoid traveling to Shelekhov and nearby settlements due to the reported plague case — then deleted the warning less than two hours later. #plague #Russia
