I finally crawled into the big straw bed that all the kids in the family shared and tried to go to sleep; I was glad that most of the young ones were already asleep and not making a fuss. My heart started pounding as I tucked myself in, though; packing had made everything that much more real, and it was settling into my brain that this was the last time I would ever sleep in this bed with all of them. This big, warm, crowded, sometimes-peed-in bed, where we all shared whatever sicknesses someone had picked up first, and where we’d once woken up to find my little cousin Nemmy dead. Yeah, I was making the right decision.
