To the south was a thousand miles of rain forest, and then another thousand miles of rain forests with mountains. The only route—viable, non-viable, or utter foolishness—remained the traverse of the Land Between North and South, which they were now upon. And it was slow. It was intractable. It was more slothful than the powerful but lackadaisical beasts which the farmers used to work their fields. It made a trip of a single day into two evenings of patient frustration as he did everything in his power to distract himself from the matter.
