Fion’s gaze roved the floorboards, the ceiling, and the rest of the unlikely places an adult male might be able to hide inside a hansom cab, then back to her surprise companion. Her pulse thrummed in her ears, but the parts of her mind that were supposed to react to danger and seek reasonable explanations for inexplicable things were strangely mute.
Joric leaned back in his seat, chest still heaving. “I think you might need an explanation for that.”
“That would be lovely. Thank you.”
He eyed her sideways. “It’s … uh … would it surprise you to hear that I don’t have a good one?”

Jin: "Typical IMC dog."

There are plenty of civilians who don’t trust the IMC, for a variety of both valid and ridiculous reasons, and some who think they can handle storm research better.
They’re usually wrong.
MC: “Listen, you’re in between me and my camp, and after the day I’ve had, I’m not going back around the long way.”

I finally crawled into the big straw bed that all the kids in the family shared and tried to go to sleep; I was glad that most of the young ones were already asleep and not making a fuss. My heart started pounding as I tucked myself in, though; packing had made everything that much more real, and it was settling into my brain that this was the last time I would ever sleep in this bed with all of them. This big, warm, crowded, sometimes-peed-in bed, where we all shared whatever sicknesses someone had picked up first, and where we’d once woken up to find my little cousin Nemmy dead.
Yeah, I was making the right decision.
