Presley was born in 1935, smack in the middle. His music and his style were individualistic in the extreme. He would set off a rock and roll revolution, of sorts. Yet he was conforming as well; he allowed himself to be drafted into the Army. This is in contrast to Muhammad Ali who refused to be inducted. It is not coincidence Muhammad Ali was born 1942 and therefore, while a Fifties Generation member technically, he was on the Fifties Gen/ Sixties Gen cusp. Revolutionary numbers for the Fifties Generation were not large, relatively, yet in being the initiators of many of the evolutionary ideas that would come into fruition in the Sixties, these Fifties Generation members were extremely important. Meanwhile, the conforming side of the Fifties Generation would continue their alliance with outmoded and dangerous ideas as brought to them from their culture and their WWII Generation elders. The one side of the Fifties Generation would listen to the beatnik poetry and socially conscious folk songs of that era of the Fifties. The other side would be conforming “Mad men” (Madison Avenue men), corporate cogs.

Other than the few like these, the great majority of less stellar scientists will acknowledge that Reality is indeterminate — as they are prodded, by the new physics, to admit — yet they will assume validity for their established understandings, in the face of contrary evidence, if not in the current scheme, then in some other and future one. Which they further presume will be built upon their current assumptions, which at most, at that time, will be refined in parts. So scientists assume the cosmos they peer into, measure, and study is the same one all other species apprehend. For, at birth and before, we experience pain unparalleled in the world of Nature and other species. This vast difference is metaphorically represented by the story in Genesis, wherein we are cast out of the Garden ... no longer to enjoy and benefit from the harmonious synergy that exists in Nature. These perinatal imprints are the foundation of our beliefs and assumptions, they are the matrix out of which we act and see. These perinatal elements have come to our understanding through the efforts of both the inner explorations of experiential pioneers into the perinatal, as well as the hard-empirical work of pre- and perinatal researchers. I might also point out that I, myself, have nearly five decades of experiential exploration into these perinatal elements, in addition to my scholarly work and research in this field. In order to keep our early pain repressed as well as to seek the satisfaction of needs — now dependent on society for them — in a haphazard world, with no real certainty those needs would be met, we evolved an adaptation of consciousness that was split from Nature and removed from our experience of life. This Ego, being separate from experience, sought to act as a director or controller of the items of our consciousness as well as of our immediate environment. Our egos were modeled upon our parents, of course. So we would have all the shortcomings they had. Or we would have others in response or in reaction to theirs. This is called human personality.

Nandor Fodor Dreamwork, Birth and Prenatal Processing and Relivings, Prenatal Origins of Consciousness and Trauma Also a psychoanalyst, Nandor Fodor (1949) focused on the reflections of birth and prenatal material in dreams. He also designed interventions in therapy to release the negative effects of birth and to process prenatal memories. He was the first to mention actual relivings of birth, in which veridical memories were recovered. You Just Can’t Slay a Volcano But what may seem to work at the second-line or psychodynamic level — the conquering or slaying of negative feelings ... and notice that I said “seem” — has no place at all at the perinatal ... or, in the case of the world, at the actual. For here, in terms of one’s feelings, the pain energy is overwhelming and pervasive, more than can be dealt with analytically or using one’s intelligence and reason. Similarly, in the outer world, the reality of the situation is too overwhelming and pervasive to be dealt with by piecemeal or “boy scout” approaches. It is also too intense and emotion churning to be dealt with as if it is just another problem to be solved that is on one’s todo list. Thus the difference between engagement at the psychodynamic versus the perinatal is analogous to that between facing the energy of a dragon and facing that of a volcano. In the outer world, similarly, the evil, like a volcano, is seen to be all-pervasive and intractable. It does not suffice voting out a low-level authority or removing a corrupt official or police officer acting as a tyrant, when the structures of societies throughout the world embody a model of humanity containing a hierarchy with each level below subservient to the one above and the ones at the very top needing to keep everyone below enslaved lest they are ousted from their position at the apex. PRODIGAL HUMAN Page 16 As mentioned, we see in the fossil records some evidence that our pelvic bones became wider for a while, which would have made birth somewhat easier. But what this probably meant, in actuality, is that the baby, needing twenty-one months in the womb, ideally, (we’ll get to that next chapter) was coming out at some point after nine months. It has been said, the bone records show a gestation of twelve months at one point. This would have been assistive to birthing ape- sized heads and with minimal birth trauma. What is more likely is that our skulls were the larger size and some of that extra gestation needed for the bigger brain’s maturation was still happening in the womb, and there was roughly the same amount of pain involved in birth as there is today. Birth Pain Makes Us Humans Birth Pain Caused the Feverish Minds of Humans, Which We Call Intelligence To continue, remember that what is universally acknowledged to distinguish humans from other species is our intelligence and the elaboration of culture that comes from that. However, with the understanding of skull size, birth, and repression described above, we see these much-touted distinctions and claims to superiority to be merely the byproduct of our neocortical attempts to deal with unconscious pain, specifically, that of birth trauma.

I believe it is about time we rethink these prejudices, as we go about eliminating half the species on the planet, short term, because of uncontrollable human greed and insensitivity. Further, with the increasing awareness among humans about their own species- centeredness and the most promising rising up of valuing of planetmate consciousness ever in civilization — and the first since Native Americans — it seems that I should say something to address these common misunderstandings. To begin: Cows engage in female/female mounting. So? Why is that not honorable? Similarly, some monkeys have been known to engage in female genital to genital stimulation (g-g rubbing, it has been termed) when celebrating. What is wrong with that? I would say humans are the ones who are culturally narcissistic and judgmental ... not to mention homophobic. For who do these activities harm? They are physically the equivalent of massaging. But since they do it in contrast to our cultural norms, we call these behaviors dishonorable. So who is not being honorable, really?

— well, primal folks were often left in that liminal state. Having cleared their old selves from consideration, they lacked the spiritual or transpersonal insight or vision around which to build a newer better person. This might also have been due to the fact that Janov’s prescribed route of primal therapy eliminated, even ridiculed, transpersonal or spiritual experience. As I was saying above, it required my reconceptualization of Janov’s theory, as presented in my writing, for some to have the Primal framework that acknowledged their transpersonal experiences and supported them in going forward into them. What some of us, outside of Janov’s institute, discovered was that it was only when one accessed deeper experiences that were positive ... and it did require one to continue the process until those more positive experiences were accessed ... that one could have a basis for building a better life and making better decisions.
