I also have a small cutting of rock crowberry, which is a neat species because it’s only found along the coast in Nova Scotia on exposed headlands in northern Cape Breton and the Chebucto peninsula (where Halifax is located).

• Native range in Canada: QC, PE, NS, NL
• Native habitat: exposed headlands, barrens
• Soil: average - moist
• Light: full sun - part shade
• Height: 10 - 30 cm
• Blooms: white/pink/purple, April - May
• Ecological benefits: There is little information about this plant, but it's likely that flowers attract butterflies and berries attract birds.
• Notes: This is a heather-like shrub.

Planted #NativePlants Phyla lanceolata (Fogfruit) years ago in more shade than it likes because that is where I had a moist low spot. Did OK but was starting to peter out so I transplanted what remained to sun—happy again!

A male long-horned bee feeding on a red Gaillardia pulchella flower. He is a small be with thick golden hair on his face, shoulders and legs, green eyes, long antennae, and a black abdomen with faint stripes of white hair. The picture shows the whole flower and the bee's small size. It is probably Melissodes dentriventris, the Tooth-bellied Longhorn Bee. We know he is male because females have shorter antennae.A closeup picture of the bee from the side. Do you have a brush pile and a rock pile in your garden for wildlife? Every time I prune trees, I add to my brush pile. Every time I dig up more lawn, I add to my rock pile. #nativeplants I hope that snakes, salamanders, insects, and other small critters can make homes here.

🌸 field thistle 🌿
Cirsium discolor

#nativeplants #ecoregion71

seen from the side, a large composite flower with an urn-shaped receptacle covered in small, green, scale-like phyllaries each with a light green stripe running vertically down the middle and a long golden yellow spike rising diagonally outwards from the tip. at the top of the flowerhead there are no ray florets, but hemispherical mass of numerous disk florets with long, very thin tubular, five-lobed corollas colored light pink. the disks' styles are much taller than the corollas, and for a part of their length are enrobed within a tube of fused anthers. some lil insects are crawling between the disks. spiny green leaf bracts surround the base of the flowerhead. same flowerhead, seen from a much higher angle- the urn-shaped, spine-covered base is obscured. this flowerhead has only disk florets, no rays, but the disks are numerous, many dozens, facing all directions outwards. their corollas are long, thin tubes that terminate in five thin, spreading lobes. each floret has five stamens with long, slender filaments that extend slightly beyond the mouth of the corolla. above that point, the stamens' anthers fuse into a tube that surrounds the style; at the very tips, the anthers are purple. the styles are extremely long and generally curve skyward at least a bit. there is a bee or fly flying around on the left, and a closer bee on the right climbing among the forest of styles. it has black legs and eyes, a light yellow & fuzzy body, and long brown antennae.a bad photo which shows the stem of a field thistle from near its base up high enough to see five flowerheads, none of which are blooming. the green stem bears alternate leaves, green with deep pinnate lobes which are sharp & spiky. from the main stem grow several ascending branches, all lined with spiky leaves, all of which terminate in a flowerhead which is not blooming 😮‍💨. they are urn-shaped and covered in spines. the thistle comes up near to head height.

Bit of a happy surprise at one of the restoration sites that I haven't been to in awhile. Thought this pawpaw died over the winter because it's previous main stem didn't sprout. Grew a new stem over the summer, though still some hope. #nativeplants
