The beautiful cone tooth fungus, scientifically known as Auriscalpium vulgare, grows from a fallen fir cone. Its fuzzy brown stipe grows at an angle parallel to the ground before turning straight up for about an inch, leading to its toothy light brown cap. The cap is circular with slightly rough edges. Tiny light brown teeth, each about a millimeter long, hang down and are packed tightly together. A small, bright yellow-orange mushroom emerges from a bed of pine needles and grass. Its rounded cap is smooth and bulbous, with a warm orange center fading to vivid yellow around the edges. The cap has several pale, flaky patches and bits of debris clinging to its surface. A short, pale stem is partially hidden beneath the cap and surrounding needles. Pinecones, fallen needles, twigs, and tufts of green grass fill the forest floor around it, with the background softly blurred to emphasize the mushroom.
