L. S. LOWRY (1887 - 1976) “Going to Work”, 1943. The Imperial War Museum, London UK.

#arthistory #art #Labor #Manchester

Lowry captured the industrial landscapes of northern England, where he lived his entire life, with a keen eye and a distinctive style. Factories, mills, streets crowded with stick-like people, railways and sporting events (he was a huge Manchester City Football Club fan) fill his canvases. In “Going to Work”, Lowry’s grey atmosphere emphasizes the monotony and drudgery of going to the same factory day after day; the stylized workers stream in to work from the streets and from two buses on the right. Manchester was a major industrial and manufacturing hub for the British war effort and as such it suffered devastating destruction from frequent German Luftwaffe air raids. Lowry included a couple of barrage balloons above his factory in “Going to Work”; the balloons were supposed to deter the enemy bombardments. Lowry produced a large number of paintings, which sold very well during his lifetime, but he was actually never a full-time artist. His primary job was as a rent collector. He was meticulous about painting every night after work, a discipline he exercised for decades. The factory depicted in this painting was the Mather & Platt plant in Manchester that manufactured engineering equipment; it remained in business until 2019, when it closed for good, and was later demolished.

Why settle? If you're a worker, you want all the money you're due. Settling often means diminishing your outlay, but workers don't want less than they've earned. The numbers are there. #labor #settlement

Corporate downsizing gets dressed up as aesthetic store improvements.
Starbucks Closing 250 Stores Across North America
Evidence: Portfolio Upgrades, Labor Downsizing, Margin Protection
#Aletheia #Labor #Starbucks

Alethekanon Psochic Hegemony Assessment Graph for Starbucks is closing 250 stores this week. Here’s what to knowCore Verdict Card for Starbucks is closing 250 stores this week. Here’s what to know: Claim, Reality, and Verdict coordinates.System Analysis Details:

Context: Sub-Audits Breakdown:
- Executive Leadership: FAIL (-0.84, -0.78) — Cloaking cuts in branding talk.
- Labor Transparency: FAIL (-0.88, -0.75) — Suppressing closure lists & union data.
- Frontline Workers: COND (+0.55, -0.65) — Bearing brunt of closures.

Nuance: Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol announced 250 North American store closures, continuing restructuring after 900 corporate layoffs and 627 store shutdowns last year, while more than 700 unionized shops remain without a contract.

Breakdown: The Poison:
Framing store shutdowns and worker displacement as an effort to make cafes 'cozier' weaponizes hospitality language to distract from cost-cutting maneuvers designed to satisfy Wall Street margins.

Social Physics: The Breakdown & Plane Error:
Severe Metaphysical and Possible plane failures (WHO and WHAT). Management switches the actual beneficiary (investor margins) with a decoy beneficiary (customer comfort) while suppressing closure data.

Trajectory: Social Physics Analysis:
Leadership runs a Smart Selfish Maneuver. They disguise bottom-line contraction behind the pretext of cafe aesthetics, hoarding power by withholding data on unionized stores while projecting performance blame onto local branch staff.

The Unavoidables: The Trajectory: The Path of Deception.
When you map the gap between stated intentions and ground-level results, it plots a direct trajectory toward Greater Evil, eroding worker trust to boost corporate balance sheets.

Alethekanon: The Unavoidable Truth: 250 communities lose coffeehouses and workers lose livelihoods to protect executive margins.

The Unavoidable Lie: Shutting down hundreds of neighborhood stores is simply about making them cozier.

Awwthekanon: Alethekanon:
The core deception lies in the information blackout: hiding which stores close prevents workers and the public from seeing whether union shops were selectively targeted, substituting PR spin for transparency.

Brothekanon: Awwthekanon:
Baristas who poured their hearts into making our daily routines warmer are suddenly left wondering if their jobs exist next week. People are not line items on an executive spreadsheet.

Tips are for the driver, not the platform. If a business model relies on these workers, they should be classified as employees and paid accordingly, every single time. #gig economy #labor

September's theme: Labor
HAROLD WESTON (1894 - 1972), “Building the United Nations #1, Steelwork of Secretariat”, 1949. Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC.
#arthistory #art #Labor #UnitedNations #NYC

Weston was stricken by polio in 1911 that left his left leg paralyzed. Unable to serve in uniform during World War I, he volunteered through the YMCA as a liaison to the British Army in Baghdad, bringing entertainment activities including art classes to the soldiers; he soon became the Official Painter for the British Army in the Middle East. These years impressed upon him the perils of food insecurity, famine and disease and he spent the rest of his life organizing humanitarian food relief efforts. Back in the US, Weston withdrew to a rustic cabin in the Adirondack Mountains, where he relished the quiet and communed with nature. The outbreak of World War II drew him to Washington DC, where he founded Food for Freedom to combat war-related famine abroad. After the war, he made a series of six paintings (1949 – 1952) of the construction of the United Nations complex in New York City. Unsurprisingly, the UN’s mission aligned perfectly with his personal philosophy of working cooperatively to create a more peaceful world; he believed the United Nations was the “greatest hope for a better world”. “Building the United Nations #1, Steelwork of Secretariat” is bathed in the golden light of optimism. Weston painted in a modernist style, showcasing technology that moves civilization forward. His construction scene is filled with activity as the structure rises up towards the sky, with laborers working together to make this dream building a reality. In addition to his food relief activities, Weston also advocated tirelessly for government support of the arts and the creation of the National Endowment for the Arts; the NEA became a reality when legislation passed in 1965.
