For almost Ten years, We, the Rohingya have been living inside the camps in Bangladesh as a Refugee, waiting for a safe way to return home.

Those who have never lived this way may see a refugee camp as a place of shelter. But for those of us who have spent years here, the feeling can be very different. You can be physically safe from one danger and still feel trapped by another. We didn't choose to spend our youth behind these walls. We didn't choose displacement. We want the same things people everywhere want: safety, freedom, dignity, education and a future we can decide for ourselves.

The world has watched the Rohingya crisis for years. But watching is not the same as living it. If you have never lived behind these walls, you may never fully feel this pain. But you can listen to those who do.

Living here, I know how painful it is to feel restricted. Sometimes I can't freely go where I want and there are times when I can't even go to my own shelter of Bamboo because of security and restrictions. We are not numbers on a refugee list. We are people who want to live freely, safely and with dignity. Years are passing, while many Rohingya children are growing up knowing only camp life and the word of Refugee. We still don't know when we will be able to return home safely and rebuild our lives. This is what life inside the camp feels like.

But as a woman, a registered Democrat, and a divorce victim, I wish the threat was real.”
