September 1942 Neue Bestimmung für Juden: Verbot, arische Wäschereien zu benutzen. - Unten die Waschküche ist ein Riesenraum, sie hat für Eva nichts Abschreckendes, sie beengt nicht. - Vielleicht werden wir dort zu zweit große Wäsche halten. Wie das Ehepaar Milke. Er ist Zellenleiter, er darf mit uns keine Konversation machen, aber man begrüßt sich höflich, stört sich nicht. Ich laufe ja andauernd von unserer wasserlosen Küche zum Abspülen dort hinüber. Und dann ist noch »Fräulein Hulda« da, jahrelang die Haushälterin der Frau Jacoby, vordem bei Ralph von Klemperer angestellt, sehr judenfreundlich, hat noch für Frau Jacoby gesorgt, als ihr das längst verboten war, wird jetzt uns eventuell mit Waschgerät aushelfen.Diary entry on September 11, 1942 New decree for Jews: Ban on using Aryan laundries. The washhouse downstairs is a huge room; there is nothing intimidating about it for Eva; it's not cramped. - Perhaps the two of us together will do a big wash there. Like the Milke couple. He is a Party cell leader and is not allowed to make conversation with us, but he greets us politely, is no bother. And then there's "Fraulein Hulda," for years Frau Jacoby's housekeeper, employed by Ralph von Klemperer before that, very philo-Semitic, continued to look after Frau Jacoby, long after she was forbidden to do so; will now possibly help us out with washing appliances.
