River and canal.
Buildings from different centuries
await the same May.

At the junction of the Moskva River and the Vodootvodny Canal, time behaves in unusual ways. A modest nineteenth-century gatekeeper's house stands beside the Imperial River Yacht Club. Behind them rise the domes of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and the buildings of the former Red October factory. For a moment, the city appears to abandon chronology altogether, allowing several eras to occupy the same landscape at once. The photograph merely accepted the invitation.

Black-and-white photograph of a downtown Knauer’s Market storefront, with a large weathered painted sign reading “Knauer’s Market Quality Food” above the building and a vintage projecting sign repeating the name. The current storefront advertises meat, seafood, and downtown groceries, with “Since 1886” displayed beneath the main sign.
