Bill and Storm's indiscretion violated the social contract so "the intelligence of the sensible and civilized husband is insulted, and he's reduced to the most insensible and uncivilized behavior." Now civility is just a pretense to cloak his murder.
It's amazing how a few stern days of facial hair made Kronin not look fresh out of high school. #tcmparty #obsession
An angel in life & forever!

When Clive chains Bill to the rubble, he rejects the veneer and embraces the new reality in a way his club bros and wife do not. By turning a Blitzed ruin into a dungeon, he uses decay as a weapon for his perfect murder. The metaphor made literal. #Obsession #TheNoirCollective #TCMParty
In the post-war world, the conventions of British power and wealth have been hollowed out, leaving a husk of civilization over a mouldering core of bad coffee, devalued currency and discarded social mores.
Through the garage door like Alice's looking glass, past blown out windows and blasted lots, down into the depths goes Clive. His descent is the only time we see the reality of bombed London, that behind Mayfair's elegant façade lies desolation and ruin.

This is almost Expressionism.
OBSESSION (1949) is #FilmNoir by way of horror.
Even the pipes here – tracing his form – accentuate Clive’s alienation and isolation. The hidden room doesn’t just serve as a physical prison for Bill; it exposes Clive’s emotional seclusion. #Obsession is about a man who’s trapped – but which man is that? #TheNoirCollective #TCMParty
Because the extremity of the situation shrouds the characters’ true selves, it falls to Dmytryk and cinematographer C.M. Pennington-Richards to clarify. Here as elsewhere, Clive is so doused in practical lighting, he looks like a man missing part of his soul. #TheNoirCollective #TCMParty #Obsession
Now we see the doodles Clive made at the club and at work were of his murder weapons. It is the problem he never stops trying to solve, the gun on the crossword puzzle.
What a sweetie! 😍

Robert Newton in OBSESSION (1949) is as much mad scientist as he is doctor.
