De vrouw wijst op twee langetermijnproblemen: het ontbreken van een Deltaplan en de afnemende leesvaardigheid, waardoor de kenniseconomie wordt bedreigd. De man reageert echter enthousiast omdat we wél zijn “ingeënt tegen gordelroos”. De humor ontstaat door dit absurde contrast: terwijl de grote problemen letterlijk tot aan de nek komen, vieren we een relatief klein en concreet succes. Daarmee bekritiseert de cartoon kortetermijndenken en politieke prioriteiten. Dit sluit aan bij de LinkedIn-post van Mildred Hofkes. Zij benadrukt dat goed bestuur vraagt om vooruitkijken, langetermijnkeuzes en aandacht voor klimaat én leesvaardigheid. Beide zijn volgens haar essentieel voor een leefbare samenleving en een sterke kenniseconomie.
