The great thing about a Neanderfoot-Powered story is that most everyone has two, they're pretty much free, and maintenance is part of personal hygiene. 😅

All kidding aside, while there are animals that serve as mounts, it's mostly a story told on foot. 1/2

Oh, yeah, no, Noyimarrans walk everywhere.

The city is only 2.5km at its widest and pretty flat, and most of the roads are paved and in good condition—accumulated refuse in the gutters notwithstanding.

So it's not hard walking around, but a good thing they have paw pads all the same.

Within the city, you walk or ride a carriage if you have money. Horses are rare in Zhaaz, but they get around very well on the ramps. You can hitch a ride with a merchant's cart for a few blocks.
There are more options for travelers outside of town ->

there are all sorts of transportation options available, and since oil and therefore ICEs aren't a thing, the air quality is also much better. Personal vehicles, robotic 'horse' drawn carriages, public transport vehicles including both ground... (1/2)

The streets and roads are maintained by the local authority, bus service is run by a private company.

Unfortunately, B_____ fell victim to car culture in C20, like most English cities. Parts of the town are regularly logjammed. There's a train station, but it's on the outskirts. There are a *lot* of medieval streets in the centre, though, which means much of that area is pedestrianized. #Septopolis

Good morning, #Septopolis.

Today's question encompasses both personal transport as well as industry's needs, but I'm also curious to know how you choose to handle mass public transport as well (as a goal of our real world!).

For maintenance: how is it done and how is it funded?

A daily prompt card for #Septopolis 2026, hosted by @khonri.com.

Infrastructure, 17. How is transportation handled and maintained? Are there a variety of options for residents to use, and how much mass public transit is available, if it is possible in your setting?

Interpret each prompt as suits your needs! Talk about relevant characters! Yap! Or don't! Develop a new city or whatever or talk about one you already built. Make friends.

The background features a slightly blurred and purple hued image of the upper section of a set photograph of Main Commercial Street in Fritz Lang's Metropolis (UFA, 1927) of towering buildings.

Hello #Septopolis!
This is quite interesting for Winterstone, since the city is not, in fact, meticulously planned. The capital of Wardenreach, Ironwatch, is a planned city, with straight streets and square blocks.
Despite being a human city, Winterstone is not.

Not so much magic as the elementals themselves. People have little fire elementals in their stoves. Earth elementals compost waste and dig tunnels. Things like that. There are people who can wield elemental magic, I think, but I haven't really focused on them just yet.

Wertham is BIG. Not quite New York levels of big but just as dense and even more stratified. A lot of the surrounding mainland is too steep or swampy, so the islands and main peninsula have been heavily urbanized for centuries.

#Septopolis 2026! 9/16 To give an aesthetic idea of Mukhad, imagine ancient Egyptian styles of architecture alongside Islamic and Arabian. Sandstone is a favored material, much of which is imported from the northern desert regions. By size, this city holds a human population of at least 200,000.

West Harewood is a town of 5-10k souls, mostly concentrated within the Galleria, a massive (by Folk standards) residential complex/market/public forum build by hollowing out and expanding a row of human-built terraced houses. Larger Folk live more spread out in the town's outskirts

Belaqua is a bit of a charming mess, having sprung up as a fishing village initially and then grown into a tourist hub. The oldest parts are a bit of a picturesque "old town", though carefully managed for tourist expectations. The further up the promontory you go...

16) Size

Platypus Station is an asteroid that used to be a mining colony. Its early growth was driven by the metals (mostly platinum group) being extracted. This created more space, which allowed more people to move there.

The earliest structures were on the outside of the asteroid.

City layout in my story?

Cities on Venus are flocks of airships. They keep changing shape, self-organizing through the rhythms of complex city life, which looks similar to how starling flocks are in the linked video—except the flying cities are miles in extent.

Celestial Temple Traveling Cloaks are a particularly popular garment that originated in Safe Harbor.

Plain, hooded, white cloaks of heavy material, they're highly functional with an understated elegance.

Sforzando Alighieri wears one even when visiting royal courts and wealthy houses.

The city was just a tiny village on a speck of dirt off the coast of Australia back then but then soon grew into the massive one that is in 1984. Zeus also built the gates and borders to make sure no… incidents… happen from any of the other kingdoms on the island.
