Erid Fauna Profile #1: Shell-breaker leech

Named for their ability to break through the protective shells of most eridani wildlife, these hardy pests are no problem on their own, hence their tendency to hunt in packs.

Their sturdy bodies are corded with muscle, enabling them to launch themselves at unsuspecting prey. If they manage to hit their mark, the five sharp prongs at the edges of their mouth sink in, injecting a paralyzing agent into the target.

Once prey has been sufficiently immobilized, the rows of teeth get to work on carving chunks out of a hard shell, until they can breach the closed system within.

They rarely hunt eridians, but they also won't pass up an opportunity if they manage to get one alone.

Ryland Grace sleeping while holding Rocky in his arms. Rocky is in his xenonite bubble, of course! He can’t sleep, because he has to keep watch to make sure Grace is safe. ^w^ This picture was largely based on my own interpretations from reading the book. I only just finished the movie yesterday as I write this. I’m glad I read the book first, because I enjoyed it so much more! As such, I’m trying to go with my initial vision of what the characters and setting looked like. I drew the bed (I made it egg-shaped, but I think it was described as an oval) attached to the ceiling with straps. The floors are metal plates (you can’t tell in the scan, but I colored them with glittery metallic paints!), and the walls would be white if they were visible. I made sure to give Grace his burn scars. The movie really didn’t do it justice. I think the scar is a beautiful symbol of his devotion to Rocky. <3 Oh, I imagined Rocky’s ball as being perfectly round and seamless like this. I’m not sure if it said it was made of hexagonal (or pentagonal) plates, like the wall in the tunnel, but I like the idea of him easily rolling along. I imagined it perfectly clear, but I colored it pale blue-gray to make the bubble more obvious. Although the scanner didn’t pick up the blue too well. Maybe I’ll take some photos in the light later, so you can see the glitter on the metal floor and the texture of the paper. I think I imagined Grace wearing a jumpsuit type thing for most of the scenes, but since I wanted to show his scar, I ended up drawing the long sleeved shirt from the movie.

Done with Canson cold-pressed watercolor paper, Pentel mechanical pencil, Pentel eraser, Copic Multiliner pen, Sakura Pigma Micron pen, Mei Liang watercolor paints, Marie’s watercolor paints, and Sakura Koi watercolor paints, as well as a white Posca marker and a white GellyRoll pen.
