A Pictish cross-slab was moved from Benvie Churchyard, on the outskirts of Dundee, to the city’s McManus Galleries #OTD in 1991. The 9thC Benvie Stone bears a cross with angels and intertwined serpents on one side, and mounted warriors with drooping moustaches on the other.

Martin Ryle died #OTD in 1984. In the aftermath of WWII, he was a pioneer of interferometry and aperture synthesis in radio astronomy with the Cambridge group. For this he received the 1974 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Joseph Plateau was born #OTD in 1801. A Belgian physicist and mathematician, he worked in optics, inventing an early stroboscopic device, and surface tension problems. Plateau’s laws describe the structure of soap films.

• We see juncos just about every day we take a walk in our neighborhood. Which is not to say that they are uninteresting birds. It’s just that they are very subtly shaded – black head, delicately etched black wings and tail, and a rusty collar around the shoulders and back of the neck. • • The most striking attribute of juncos is on that is just faintly visible in this photo – the single bright white feather on the edge of one side of its tail. You can see it on the right side of the bird’s tail in this photo.
