First birds of my day: a charm of fifteen Goldfinch twittering gaily as they flew around the treetop opposite, while a pair of Rook raucously passed on their way overhead.

(I have seen Skylark and Meadow Pipit on Port Meadow this morning - among many other birbs!)

First Redwing of the Autumn in the park (Woodhouse Moor). Hopefully lots more to come.

But no Spotted flycatcher and likely none this year now we're into October - records only on Aug/Sept other years (grey bars on the graph).

31 spp for the week of birding in the city.

Graph of peak count of my Redwing versus Spotted flycatcher records in an urban park over 10+ years. Spotted flycatcher, grey bars, a few records in August and September as birds pass through. Redwing, orange bars, arrive in October and then present through the winter, eventually leaving in April.

Good Morning Bluesky Folks!

My first capture features a photograph of Two House Sparrows that I photographed in a hedge on my iPhone 17 Pro!

#Birds🪶 #NaturePhotography #PhotographersOfBlueSky #NatureLover #UKBirding #WildlifePhotograph #RedKite

A crisp photograph features two House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) perched at different heights against a plain, pale grey sky.
Lower Male Sparrow: Positioned just above a dense, leafy bush, displaying distinct male markings including a dark black bib, grey crown, chestnut nape, and rich brown streaked wings.
Upper Sparrow: Perched higher up on slender, bare branches, exhibiting the softer brown-and-tan streaked plumage typical of a female or juvenile.
Foreground & Setting: The base of the image features lush foliage dotted with small red berries (rosehips), set against an uncluttered sky that highlights the clear details of both birds.

The probable Todd's Canada Goose I found at Slimbridge WWT last week may have been open to debate, but there was no doubting the Night Heron that flew by uttering it's gutteral call at Ham Wall 2 days later. A quartet of Glossy Ibis showed particularly well from Avalon hide #ukbirding

We’ve had a good run of scarce waders in Oxon recently. The latest is this Pectoral Sandpiper at the Oxfordshire Golf Club near Thame. Neat little bird that can be very close in if there are less than competent golfers around that keep mis-hitting balls at it! #ukbirding

We totally lucked out on our Scilly day trip today - and not just with the weather! The Sora Rail showed perfectly as soon as we'd squeezed into the hide at Porth Hellick. The crossings were productive too, with 30+ Grey Phal, 50+ Euros, loads of Common Dolphin & 1 Risso. #ukbirding #rarebirdsuk

The Yellow Wagtail at Cley this pm. Superficially striking in its grey & white plumage, was its back a little too brown & the face pattern a little soft for Eastern? All its flight calls sounded Western & the odd more buzzy note was often in alarm. My sonograms seem to bear this out. #UKBirding

The grey and white Yellow Wagtail at Cley this afternoon. A smart and striking bird but was the back a little too brown washed and the face a little too soft? Hard to judge the hind claw as it fed in wet grass. Eastern and Western seem to overlap in most / all plumage features so the call is all important. This sonogram, recorded on my iPhone15, over the background chatter and gravel crunching seems to show a simple (Western) pattern without the saw-like tail produced by the more buzzy call of Eastern. This was the most buzzy call I recorded. An alarm call made when the Wagtail was flushed and chased by a Meadow Pipit. Despite the more buzzy note apparent in the sound recording the sonogram looks much the same as the flight calls. Assuming this isn’t a limitation of the recording device then the pattern seems to better fit a Western Yellow Wagtail, perhaps a Grey-headed?
