Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) eating Simpson's Stopper (Myrcianthes fragrans) berry for a better late than never #BirdoftheDay theme #BirdsWithBerries. #birds #nativeplants #Florida

A Northern Mockingbird in the middle of a mass of thin branches cover with small green leaves with ripe, bright orange berries, and unripe yellow berries. The gray bird with a light underside is contorted, forming an upside down U-shape, with the head forward, in order to grab the largest, brightest red-orange berry with their opened beak. The image is a millisecond before the berry is plucked.

Before native plants gardening, I was missing out on purple as a traditional fall color.

An Oak Tree a Day
A Quercus lobata (valley oak) that looks to be losing its leaves a little early. After the hottest summer in recorded history, I don’t blame it. Get your rest while you can, #climateChange is just starting. California #nativePlants #nature

An oak tree with upright branches and one very long horizontal limb with a smattering of green leaves mostly on the ends of branches. It rests on a small hill covered in dried grasses and other brown plants behind a post and cable fence. The sky is baby blue.

Got to show off cool bees to some cool neighbors at a garden project today. They were pretty amazed by the existence of green bees!

Plant native plants, connect with neighbors.

I haven't been out hiking in three weeks, but here are a few photos from the last time I was out. I need to get out again soon.

10 or 15 years ago, I dug an American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) sapling from my place and planted it in town. The fruit is seedless! No male trees nearby. All the persimmon trees at my house have seeds in the fruit.

The second trillium species that I tried to grow from seed this year and did not germinate is red trillium.

Fingers crossed they germinate next year, after another winter of stratification. For a #nativeplants garden with trillium would be 👌

Two small seed starting trays of soil with (not visible) red and painted trillium seeds. They were spilled and so are a mix of both species and the trays are labelled “Trillium sp.”A crimson red trillium in a forest. Photo courtesy Thomas L. • Native range in Canada: ON, QC, NB, NS
• Native habitat: moist woodlands
• Soil: medium - moist, well-drained, nutrient-rich
• Light: part shade - full shade
• Height: 20 - 40 cm
• Blooms: red, May - June
• Ecological benefits: Early season flowering provides nectar and pollen for pollinators such as flies and beetles. Seeds are dispersed by ants, who eat the fatty and protein-rich portion of the seed.
• Notes: The flower has an unpleasant smell, attracting carrion flies that pollinate the flowers.

The most beautiful #birds feeder for migration season is hands-down #NativePlants Aralia racemosa. Thrives in our difficult urban parkway conditions & adds so much color, habitat, life… joy.

Spotted jewelweed, Impatiens capensis. A stunning native annual of wet soils and shady areas. They can also handle full sun if it's wet enough. The flowers attract Eastern bumblebees, Bombus impatiens especially, but are also a hummingbird favorite. They reseed very easily.

Self-heal, Prunella vulgaris. I'm fairly certain it's the non-native subspecies. But honestly the effects aren't too bad. It still provides most of the same benefits the native subspecies does. But it probably muddies the genetic pool, altering the native's genetics.

Metallic bristle fly, Archytas metallicus on white meadowsweet. Adults are pollinators and larvae are believed to be parasitoids. Not much is known about them it seems.

#NativePlants selection Solidago sphacelata ‘Golden Fleece’ is a great way to add #pollinators food in small spaces and makes a beautiful edger to soften straight lines in any bed. Introduced by Mt. Cuba Center.
