*Mariner's breakfast serves up more than a meal, bringing to his mind his DiNA dilemma, and the state of 'lock-down' being imposed.

Regardless of the lock-down, Mariner, as a freeman, was still required to report to his post: the docks and the slip of the Sentimental Raven, though he knew on this day no rolling seas would he see, and the ship’s rig would remain laid up. He listened to the seal unsealing, a sudden rush of air pressing in the ears and the audible whoosh of the airlocks on the chamber doors. In moments he heard the shuffled passing of freemans in the halls, filing their way to the main chambers of the Ole Dover complex – a pentagon-shaped structure filled with cavernous rooms for ‘conference’ and closet-sized scriptoriums for the human administration of Arbitrarian rule. As captain he had time, so he lingered with his breakfast, pushing pieces of fish aside and opting to pick at the grains of rice. He inspected a single grain stuck on the edge of his wooden spoon. It magnified in his mind’s eye and became a smooth, white tube. He was back in the Pirate’s Gap, staring at the flashing blues, the six strange tubes they’d left behind. The DiNAs had barely been a thought until yesterday – just a tale to tell, different every time it’s told, though sedimental in the foundation of the legends it carried. Compared to the histories well-scripted and conveyed on the wag of elder tongues, the tales of the DiNAs are ripe with fancy, fruitful in their hopeful harvests, in an orchard of imaginations where imaginings are all that remain. ‘Easy pickings for weary minds,’ Mariner thought. ‘The apple hanging low is the first to be eaten.’ His thought of eating turned his mind back to his bowl, where a fish eye peeked out at him from beneath a sprinkling of rice.
